View Full Version : No Offside after the Penalty line rule change

I think this is the one rule that must be changed.

The whole purpose of the offside rule is to promote the Midfield play.

Thus, once the ball is beyond the penalty line, and the attacker already penetrated the defense line beyond the penalty line, shouldn't worry about offiside rule.

From the diagram, Attacter A2 passing to A3 is of course offside, but
Attacker A1 who is with ball already passed the penalty line passing to A3 shouldn't be called for offside.

Once in a while, I see goals disallowed because of this type of offside call, I think it's unfair.

This rule will encourage more of attacking soccer, creates more goals, and make it more entertaining.

What do you all think about that?

Any drawback you can think of from this?

Offside is fine as it is, apart from this stupid active or inactive thing. Stop trying to change it.

1. One drawback I could see happening is attacking players more directly screening the keeper. This leads to a ton of cheap goals in Hockey, and I wouldn't want to see the same effect on soccer.

More plentiful goals don't really add to the appeal of the game if they're just cheap tap-ins. either. The beauty of the game is breaking through things like the offside trap.

2. the Italians would NEVER let it happen! never.

Don't you consider that the attacking side already broke through the things like the offside trap, if he's already at that position with the ball?

the downside is that it would promote leaving a guy hanging out infront of the net, or at least just running right there once the ball gets over your "offside" line. What this would force is a defender to then drop with him, this was the reason offside was originally put into the game, to prevent the hanger, then requiring a defender to drop.

In your picture, the attackers haven't broken through anything except past an arbitrary line on the field. If defenders are back then they have not gotten past anything, so I don't see your argument at all.

I think people continually try to change offside cause they don't understand it. FIFA has recently changed the "interpretation" of parts of it to remove the infamous "passive offside" which never existed but was invented anyway. This keeps the ball and play moving when the offside positioned guy isn't involved anyway.

The offside rule has been tampered with too much already.

It is to complicated. It simpley adds another area of contetion. Whether the player is inside or outside the box.

they should just remove offside on set pieces. thats the most annoying thing of all. other then that, the offside rule is fine with me. the problem is that the refs dont know the rule that well. they are not supposed to call it unless they are 100% certain it is offside. if they are in doubt, its supposed to be called (or not called, if you will) for the attacking team. they dont do that. so its the linesmen thats the problem, not the offisde rule in itself.

I think your idea rock. You should have added a poll with it your thread. I believe a lot of people (beside purists) would agree with you.

it would result in alot of man marking and thats one of the most boring things ever introduced to sports.

People(including the FIFA) are probably forgetting the offside rule was brought into the game to do something against poachers. And all the extra rules we get now all help poachers.

You still need it on set pieces. It would be unfair to the defensive team to allow the attackers ahead of the defense on an indirect free kick.

the problem is that the refs dont know the rule that well.
That's ridiculous. Pretty much the only responsibility of an AR (besides calling fouls along the touchline) is determine offsides. They probably know that rule alot better than any of us.
