Lens vs Halmstad on Rush HD.

Don't know why GolTV passed on all SportFive games.

Apparently Rush HD has the rights to the SportFive UEFA cup games for 3 of the 4 remaining UEFA Cup weeks, so no UEFA on GolTV or Setanta those weeks.

Hope that's not true, the Champions League/UEFA three day midweek bonanza almost make non-weekend days worth living. Almost.

Not true from what I was told.

Rush HD (Cablevision/Rainbow) has first choice of UEFA Cup games from SportFive.

After Rush HD makes its pick, GolTV can then pick a game, following by a pick from Setanta.

GolTV has made its 3 picks:

Crvena Zvezda (Red Star Belgrade) vs Basel 11am ET LIVE
Middlesbrough vs Dnipro 3pm ET LIVE
Palermo vs Locomotiv Moscow 5pm ET SDD

Setanta passed on its pick. Setanta also chose NOT to license the Bolton-Zenit game from Octagon CSI.

Good, glad I had some wrong "info". I see the three UEFA games on the Spanish part of the goltv website now, that's a relief.

Pity Setanta is bypassing the round, though.

You can bet that Setanta wanted only Middlesbrough vs Dnipro, but GolTV knew that and GolTV picked that game for both GolTV US and GolTV Canada. Setanta didn't want any other game from the SportFive package so it had to pass.

Rush HD will pass on Match Day 3, which happens to be Thanksgiving Day in the US.

That will leave AZ-Middlesbrough and Guimaraes-Bolton available. GolTV will take one of these two and Setanta will probably grab the other.

I stand corrected. Guimaraes-Bolton is NOT SportFive property.

That means GolTV will probably take AZ-Middlesbrough with its pick to keep it away from Setanta.

There is only one reason why ESPN Int'l bought the Spanish-language TV rights in the US and Mexico to Bolton home game in UEFA Cup:

Jared Borgetti

The two games will be produced for ESPN Dos in Mexico, with ESPN Deportes in the US picking them up as filler.

Smart move.

ESPN Deportes appears to have been a big miscalculation so far as very few carriers, even in big markets, have shown interest. Of course, ESPN Deportes not having any popular programming except baseball and the NFL doesn't help. No significant Liga Mexicana, while the NBA, PGA Tour and Tennis only do well with rather limited slices of the Latin American market.

Wrong.

ESPN Deportes has signed COX, Charter, Cablevision, Insight, Adelphia, and DISH Network.

Only the "big 3" are holding out: Comcast, Time Warner, and DirecTV.

ESPN Deportes will have its trump card starting in February 2006: Caribbean Baseball Series (Serie del Caribe).

FOX Sports en Espanol gave up winter baseball completely in order to concentrate on Copa Sudamericana (now featuring the big Mexican teams), InterLiga (which has 8 Mexican teams including all the big ones) and Copa Libertadores (which also features 3 Mexican teams).

Serie del Caribe is a big deal to many Puerto Rican and Dominican immigrants, particularly in the New York market.

I expect ESPN to ratchet up the pressure on Time Warner and DirecTV Para Todos to add ESPN Deportes by February 2006 by using the threat of a joint marketing campaign with DISH Network to take customers away from Time Warner and DirecTV Para Todos.

Comcast will probably be the last holdout.

A digital channel such as ESPN Deportes, which has no original programming of its own as every program is a simulcast of what is shown on either ESPN Latin America or ESPN Dos (Serie del Caribe has been a cornerstone on ESPN Dos for many years), is structured to turn a profit at around 5 million households. That should be fairly easy for ESPN to achieve.

And you're right, baseball is KING in NYC. Time Warner will pick it up almost as fast as they picked up YES once people realized what the channel would have.

Comcast will probably play their usual hardball games with ESPN. ESPN will probably end up winning again, because while they charge a ton, they are amenable to putting niche channels on digital cable. Comcast could learn a lesson from ESPN with regards to OLN (even though The Golf Channel has been a success), especially seeing as ESPN is who they're after.
