Hurt knee and ankle at Arsenal. Not expected back until 11/19. I'll take the over.

Ugh.

If Reyna, JOB (injuries) & Landon (MLS Cup?) aren't available, that could make for some ugly midfield play. We desperately need more attacking depth in the center of the park.

actually, having reyna out will give arena a chance to give a back-up really good experience with the top euros....

so a midfield of

mastroeni o'brien
martino beasley

might be in the works...

mixing in mapp or convey is also a possibility.

Hopefully not Ralston.

I think quaranta has passed ralston right now....

I guess martino is the guy arena is most likely to want to look at again...

if the galaxy dont make mls cup, I guess donovan gets a call, but arena might be more interested in looking at others at get a better bead on them...

mapp might be another guy in the mix too....

Freddy of course gets his call up.......Fredinho, do ya want a piece of the ancestors of Braveheart and their bite tackeling in midfield partner??? Bruce, let him have a run and tell him to put up or shut up now that we are looking at Martino in the middle.

Why do you believe this? Ralston may not have amazing 1 v 1 skills (not that Quaranta does) but he is a tireless worker. He sends in well placed crosses, combines well with a wide variety of players and doesn't bring an ego to the team.

I view Ralston as a definite member of the 2006 squad. The guy just runs, runs, runs and he is always looking to use his teammates.

Quaranta, on the other hand, brings a sizeable ego to the team, dribbles too much with his head down (See the Costa Rica match for numerous examples) and is lazy getting back on defense. Quaranta is a much better attacker than Ralston and can play 2 positions - I'm just not sure that adds up to getting a nod in the midfield.

I agree. Ralston has a very high work rate, has some speed, and sends in good crosses ... which makes it easy for guys like McBride and Onyewu to knock 'em on home. Ralston also seems to be an Arena favorite ...

I haven't seen much of Quaranta so I can't make a judgement on him ... but yes, he does tend to be lazy about defense ... not just in international play but also in the few DC United matches I've seen him play in.

I see ralston as a nice but limited player, a bubble guy who's a nice role player...

quaranta has showed some nice stuff...

a little of this is projection, as ralston is a known quantity without much more upside...quaranta should continue to grow as he plays against a better caliber of play...

I agree with martino earning another look..and I suspect mapp could be in the equation too for scotland....

all of this precludes january 4th, when I think 30-40 mls guys might end up in the camp, newbies and oldies galore...

Well, we are specifically talking about filling the right midfield spot. No question Ralston is limited to that position, and it's much more desirable to have players who can play more than one spot, but does Q's performance on the right flank even warrant him getting a shot?

What do you mean by "nice stuff?"

Q played well in the Gold Cup - coming on as a sub and adding some attacking infusion from the flank. His best contributions were usually slashing inside with the ball.

However, he is reluctant to take the ball to the corners. Try and watch the DCU-Chicago game on sunday - or pop in the Costa Rica or Panama qualifiers, you'll see him think about going to the sideline, and then freaking out and giving the ball up in the middle. He has simply been too one-dimensional. It's almost as if he's afraid to hit the ball with his left.

I think the usa in germany will NOT be going with a pure right winger, as cherundolo pushing up from right back will be how arena gets width...

in a midfield of:

mastroeni reyna
donovan and beasley

I see more a box, although beasley would get wider on the left making it more lopsided

we could add variations of o'brien into the mix, instead of mastroeni...

again, cherundolo is the guy pushing forward..

I can see quaranta being a better fit in this type of attacking system.....

again, I'm also prjecting MORE improvement from quaranta....

I'm not saying there isn't room for both Ralston and Quaranta on the team, but after having been around the team numerous times now, I think a big PLUS for Ralston is his lack of ego and his maturity.

Q has an ego and also looks like a kid who just kind of ended up on the team without necessarily deserving it. I think BA's preference for players who perform well for their clubs comes from the fact that those players tend to be more mature and less primadonnaish.

Cherundolo has never been a great attacker. Eddie Lewis coming out of the back, definitely, but not Dolo. He usually moves up enough to provide midfield support, but he never really gets into the attack.

Plus, having to rely on defenders to provide wing support worked so well against Costa Rica.

my vision of the usa in germany has usa being far more counter team, than one who builds the attack and breaks down the other guy...

hence, a reliance on transitional players....donovan, beasley, GAM, with the target (holding presence) of mcbride (throw ching into there too)

cherundolo reading of the game will determine when he gets foward and he'll provide the occasional foray on the right....

I still see ralston as more a bubble guy, either last mid on or one of the last cuts....

if you're saying guy 22-23 is a cheerleader and a guy the other players like, and the other potential 22-23 guys are total jerks, then for reasons of team chemistry, arena could take the likeable guys....
