I was going to throw this in the video games thread, but thought it might get better traffic here and some better viewpoints.

Basically, I borrowed a PS@ from a friend and then borrowed GTA San Andreas from another.

For some reason, it sporadically freezes (sometimes ends up working ther times I have to reboot) during cutscenes and ALSO freezes on certain missions where the song starts to skip, quickly followed by the game freezing on screen.

I cleaned the disk, and am not sure if this is a common glitch, or something wrong with the machine or disk. Mt friend who gave me the disk said he never had that problem.

I figured someone out there might have some input. Now it is happening eveytime I try a mandatory mission so I am basically stuck.

How old is the PS2? Mine is about 5 years old and it plays most discs ok, but on discs like GTA:SA which are dual layered or something it has trouble. Had to take it apart and regrease the threads the laser slides up and down on, as well as clean the lens. Even then I still had trouble with SA and had to exchange it for a new disc. The original disc I was very conscious of keeping clean and scratch free because I knew my PS2 was finicky, but even then blemishes that a new PS2 would have no issues with caused mine to give up.

I played GTA San Andreas on my brother's PS2 and it would occasionally skip and lag. But then I found out that his PS2 had a defective magnet on the lens. So I tried playing it on my PS2 (which was newer) and there were no problems.

Like KDdidit said, older systems might have trouble with the game.

THanks guys.... I went to the local mall and exchanged it for a used copy. THAT wouldnt even boot up correctly. I went back and the guy working was nice enough to crack open a brand new copy and give me a new disk.

so far it works fine and I am guessing my buddies system is a little old and "sensitive" to any scratches that are on disks...

Same thing happened with my XBOX when I bought GTA San Andreas with it.(after finally waitng a year) brand new copy wouldnt work and the guy told me my system was "told old" and wouldnt hanlde the new double layered disks....

Personally, I think they shouldnt sell games that older systems cant play without a disclaimer..(yeah, like THAT is going to happen... ;) )
