In the past, the fourth officials from Leg 1 have often been the referees for Leg 2, so make of that what you will. Stott and Marrufo are the two referees missing that will undoubtedly be used. I imagine Toledo and Simmons have a chance, as well.

Is Okulaja considered to be a "good" MLS officials in refereeing circles? Because I'm a little irritated that they're giving him playoff games to screw up.

Okulaja, many are surprised to learn, is actually very popular with the players themselves. They are surely the reason he's a finalist for the referee of the year award. He's a former professional himself, and he tends to let them play. Fans (and maybe some fellow referees) seem to favor some of the other styles seen in MLS or elsewhere, instead.

He lets them play, definitely, and does his best to keep the teams on even footing and let the players decide the outcome. Only three red cards in 42 matches. (Compare that to Valenzuela who has shown red 28 times in 68 matches.)

Where's Kermit? Those ARs aren't all FIFAs are they?

PS. Don't forget these guys have real lives just like us and being overlooked could really have been them having some real life stuff that they couldn't miss.

Sorry for my ignorance, but what are the MLS Cup Playoffs? Is it a cup competition limited to MLS sides, with the matches drawn at random? Or has it something to do with league placings?

It is a cup competition with matches based on league placings, only open to the top four from each conference.

It is a cup competition with matches based on league placings, only open to the top four from each conference.

Just to add, it is THE primary goal for every team- no other result is as valuable.

Didn't realize that the MLS ever used foreign refs - Vergara is a Canadian FIFA AR (was in last WC). Hoping that he gets "attached" to a US ref team that goes to tje WC2006.

Hector is your guy. George is our FIFA version of "VERGARA". I believe this is George's last year on the FIFA list. I also believe that Hector is in the running for a WC slot (with an "attachment" to Batres as the Costa Rican crew).

I would say this guarantees Stott the MLS Cup whistle, but stranger things have happened.

True, or he could be given the 4th, as Tambo got when he retired. Didn't Valenzuela just have the USL1 final? Do they give two finals to the same person? I have no idea how the assignments go, so I'm asking to find out. Regardless, it'll definitely be interesting to see what happens.

Tambo's last game was an MLS Cup final between KC and Chicago. I think the USL1 Final was Valenzuela's farewell game.
