View Full Version : Friedel Best Keeper in Premiership?

Not that I'm biased as an American, but this guy has been playing like he's from another planet. He could easily be the best in the premiership, and even top 5 in the world.
If you think he's good, try and catch a New York MetroStars game and watch 23 year old Tim Howard.

I don't know that you can say he is the best because the Premiership has so many great keepers. Its very hard to say who the very best is. And as for Howard, I see him being better than Friedel when he is at Friedel's stage in his career.

Gotta love their never-say-die attitude about him though eh?
Still i will be honest enough to say that he is without a doubt one of the best in the league.
Top 5 in the world ?..well this is where i would differ......

He did not have to make many difficult saves in the Man Utd game, so I do not know if that would categorize him as one of the best in the Premiership.
Now, in the World Cup, that is another story. He played awesome and was a major reason why the US went as far as it did. One of the best in the world.
I agree with rymannryan in his assessment that there are several excellent keepers in the Premiership. It really depends week to week.
Soccer, like any sport, can make any player a hero one week and a goat the next.
Example: Kurt Warner.

Perhaps so, but his outstanding performances in many other matches in the league would categorize him in the elite.

Many times a keeper's own good work with his defense and positioning means having to make less difficult saves also.. There's a lot more to a keeper's game than the obvious. Brad has been doing well at all of it most of the time.
His distribution is also highly thought of.

He's solid, Keller plays better since he has a worse defense.

I would be very hesitant about saying any keeper in the Premiership is absolutely the best on there because the situation can all change dramatically. Just look at Dudek. He's a fantastic keeper but a couple mistakes got him benched and Kirkland has performed well in his place. And when people compare Keller and Friedel, I still don't rate Friedel higher than Keller or vice versa even after the World Cup. I've seen them both very many times to know what they're both capable of. One quality Friedel has better than Keller for sure is probably his distribution. Like someone said, its very highly regarded.

Well Brad will get a nice test this next month with the two legs against Manchester United in the Worthington Cup.
If by some chance, he gets 2 cleans sheets (don't laugh too hard please) I think the argument that he doesn't even belong in the top five in the Premier League that I saw here at BS a few months ago will be burried for the year.

After watching Cudicini in recent weeks he seems to be in awesome form.
I'd say he is probably the best in the Premiership at the moment.

In my opinion currently the top 3 Goal Keepers In the preimership in no particular order are
Brad Friedel
Carlo Cudicini
Kasey Keller

seen brad a lot recently , i'v gotta say that at moment his form is the best in prem lge.
liverpool may now regret selling him!
but top 5 in world ? nah sorry, he is top 10 tho..

I think Friedel is a good, competent keeper but someway behind Cudicini. Dean Kiely of Charlton is probably the most underated goalir in the prem.

Shay Given is the best keeper in the world. His save against Philips in last seasons Tyne Wear derby was the best save ever

I came across a recent ratings by some coaches of the top ten keepers in the Premiership:-
1. Jerzey Dudek (Liverpool)
2. Carlo Cudicini (Chelsea)
3. Mark Schwarzer (Middlesbrough)
4. Shay Given (Newcastle)
5. Dan Kiley (Charlton)
6. Fabien Bartez (Man Utd)
7. Brad Friedel (Blackburn)
8. David Seaman (Arsenal)
9. Paul Robinson (Leeds)
10. Peter Enckelman (Aston Villa)
My only disagreement is that I would have placed Brad Friedel 5th (above Kiley and Barthez).
