Fernandez: “One of the best teams in Europe”
OM begin the pool phase of the UEFA Cup against the most dangerous team in their group. “CSKA Moscow is one of the best side’s in Europe,” warns Jean Fernandez.
http://s.om.net/om/image/article/illustration/5/825.jpg
Four days after Paris, OM must prepare for a new battle...
Yes, but that’s European cup football. What’s more is that it’s really quality opposition. They’re reigning European champions, currently leading their domestic league with players capable of making the difference at any moment. I’m thinking especially of Wagner Love and Ricardo Carvalho. We’ve begun to recuperate and we’ll try to have as much energy as possible to be ready for Thursday’s match.
What information have you gathered regarding the weather in Moscow?
Today it’s good, but the forecast for Thursday is bad. They predict subzero temperatures and even snow. The playing surface is good, but the conditions could be difficult for football. We will have to adapt. Everyone coming will have to prepare beenies, gloves and scarves… no shorts!
Lorik Cana played this team last year with PSG. According to him they are, above all, a real collective…
I’ve seen several videos. As well as their stars, they seem to have very good midfielders. To be a European champion and leading in Russia they have to be very, very good right across the board. And they are. When we look at their UEFA Cup final last year against Sporting Lisbon… They returned to Sporting’s ground trailing 1-0 and they won 3-1.
So they don’t only have their big names, they’re also a good team. A team that holds its shape, is well organised and they have athletic players that are very quick. They really are one of the best teams in Europe today.
The group phase is a like a mini-league. Every point will be crucial.
In the four games we will play, I imagine we’ll have to win two and draw one, or win one game away from home. We’re starting with the toughest match knowing that we have the bye on match day 2 before hosting Heerenveen on match day 3. We need to score our points in those final three games. We have two home games (Heerenveen and Bucharest) and one match in Sofia. It could be a tough start to the group.
According to Cana, it’s in OM’s favour to go to Moscow rather than receive CSKA to the Vélodrome. Do you agree?
They’re a good counterattacking team. And it’s always harder to construct play at home, with well-built attacks. But they do have one real threat: the dead-ball situations. They have the Bereski brothers who are very strong, very tall and very good in the air. I think if we can be solid defensively we will be able to hit them on the counter.
Due to the number of games coming up, have you considered resting some players?
Apart from Fred (Déhu) everyone is ready and operational. We don’t have any injuries and no suspensions. Fred has only just resumed training and is probably a little bit underdone, so he will have a big week preparing for the week after. We know it’s a big game and we know we have another big game three days later against St Etienne, so we’ll have a long think about all that.

CSKA-OM: The real taste of Europe
OM begins the UEFA Cup group phase against CSKA Moscow. A tough first match against the title-holders, but Jean Fernandez is confident. “I feel we are really motivated,” he said.
CSKA-OM
Match Day 1 of the group phase
Thursday, October 20 – 17:30 - Dinamo Stadion
Live on M6 and OM.net
Replay at midnight on OMtv
Well-worn in Europe this season – OM play their ninth continental match this Thursday (Intertoto Cup included) Marseille take on CSKA Moscow. “We played some good games in the Intertoto and we won the competition.”. After a storming start (Lazio, Deportivo La Coruna) the Phocéens last tie was less convincing against Beerschot Antwerp.“The two games against Beerschot were disappointing, but they were very tough matches psychologically,” admitted Jean Fernandez.
Often flamboyant against more-fancied opponents, the Olympians are up against a big team in CSKA. “They are a great team, the UEFA Cup holders and currently leading their championship,” added the Marseille coach. The Moscow side has a samba feel but does boast home-grown talents as well as the redoubtable Brazilians. Among others, the striker Wagner Love, the attacking midfielder Carvalho and the solid Berezutski brothers in defence. “They are above average in terms of skill. They are a very offensive team and strong from dead-ball situations. To me, they seem as though they may lack a bit of pace at the back but they are playing at home so I expect them to play high up the pitch and really look to attack,” analysed Fernandez.
An almost full strength OM (minus Déhu) will take the field at the Dinamo Stadion with the firm intention of capitalising on the starting XI which has impressed recently in the league (15 points from a possible 18 since Sochaux).“We will not be very different from the team that played Paris, or the one that will play St Etienne (Sunday) with the same defensive structure, we’re getting closer and closer to a first-choice starting XI,”announced the trainer, who will only make one or two changes in midfield and attack. Playing Mamadou Niang alone up-front seems a distinct possibility.
In the end, Jean Fernandez is actually quite optimistic. I feel we are really motivated and I’m convinced we can have a good game. We’re playing better football and we beat Paris. CSKA are the cup holders – it will be a good test for us. .
135 Marseille fans
A plane will leave Marseille this Thursday carrying 135 supporters to the Moscow in order to support their team. Once inside the 35,000-seater Dinamo Stadion, they will be surrounded by 20 stewards from Marseille.

KSA 1-2 OM : OM make perfect start
OM made a great start to the UEFA Cup group phase as Jean Fernandez's players defeated the holders in Moscow, thanks to goals from Lamouchi and Niang.
http://s.om.net/om/image/article/illustration/5/840.jpg
CSKA 1-2 OM
0-1 Lamouchi (23)
0-2 Niang (38)
1-2 Wagner Love (79)
The Olympians trembled and not only due to the freezing cold. But they will leave Moscow with a victory to warm body and soul. Four days after overthrowing their PSG hoodoo, OM added the scalp of the reigning UEFA Cup champions CSKA Moscow. In the group of five teams, in which the only first three will continue into Spring, the success means Marseille have already taken a huge step towards qualification.
On the eve of the match, Jean Fernandez told us the felt a great motivation amongst his players. He wasn’t wrong and his prediction was confirmed in the 23rd minute when, following a nice combination between Ribéry and Taiwo, the Nigerian’s cross found the head of Lamouchi to open the score. The first real chance of the evening set OM on their way.
Little by little, the Phocéens imposed their superiority. On 38 minutes, Niang doubled their advantage with a superb strike into the top corner after superbly controlling an Oruma cross. (0-2).
However the second half was a different story. Moscow took their foot off the break and were awarded a penalty after Cesar and Taiwo fouled Samodin in the area. Luckily for OM, the first half’s ruthless efficiency in attack was matched by that of Barthez between the posts. The ‘keeper brilliantly turned away the effort from Moscow skipper Ignashevitch.
He was called into action not long after with a perfectly timed intervention on Samodin after 63 minutes before blocking Aldonin’s effort a minute later.
The Moscovite pressure didn’t abate in the final 15 minutes. If anything, it went up another notch when Wagner Love turned the ball home to reduce the arrears with ten minutes left.
In the dying stages, a Gimenez header flashed just the wrong side of the post, while in stoppage time Barthez dealt comfortably with CSKA’s final free-kick effort. Even with the Russian alphabet there was no trouble reading the scoreboard: 1-2. Before enjoying a bye on Match Day 2, OM have made a big impression.

Fernandez: “A step the right direction”
“We said before the match that we’d have to play well. We saw that with a good first half. We began well, we defended well, created some good opportunities and caused them some problems. The two goals came courtesy of some beautiful team play which isn’t always easy at this level. Even withstanding CSKA attacking potential we held on for the result. Above all, we didn’t want to lose the ball cheaply against this team and we circulated the ball well. During the first 45 minutes we had that little bit of luck on front of goal which we’ve been missing lately.
Fabien was decisive with that penalty save at 2-0 at the start of the second half. If we’d conceded a goal then it would have been tough to hold out. He answered all the questions that people have been posing. It’s a step in the right direction in this group, because we were a little bit worried coming into the game. It’s important to finish in the top three, but it’s also attractive to finish first. We now have to concentrate on Sunday and Saint-Etienne, but this win has boosted our confidence.”
[B]
Niang: “We knew how to stick together”
“Above all, it’s good to have taken the three points tonight, for the whole team. We made a very long voyage to get here and we knew how to stick together to ensure victory. I’m also personally very happy with the goal. It allowed us to make the break, even though it’s never over against the Russians. We suffered towards the end, but we knew how to hold on for the win.
Lamouchi: “My first headed goal”
“To come to Moscow and defeat the defending UEFA Cup champion isn’t something easy. We started the match well and we did well to score our two goals. But we should’ve done more to finish the game off because the second half was just them against Fabien Barthez, who stoped that penalty. The final eight minutes were tough, but we’re happy to have suffered and claimed the three points which are a great way to start the group. We know we’ve produced a very good performance, but we also know things can change very quickly.
I’m delighted because it’s the first headed goal of my career. I’ve scored headers at training... without defenders... or a goalkeeper.”
