:D
Just like the guys on RMC were saying after he scored
this one: when he takes a freekick, it's like taking
a penalty-kick. Chances are...it's going in.

That's funny, I was thinking about the goal Govou scored against Japan at the 2003 Confed Cup and telling to myself : it's a pity he doesn't score these anymore...

If someone had the League 1 standings last year at the same time, I would be very intersted to see how Lyon were doing in comparison. There is no question PLG is going to be idealized for a long time, the way he came, what he did, and the way he left are really quite magical.... but I really don't think that the team was playing better then than they are now?

now that was interesting!
first thing, i can't see how olympiakos could have possibly lost to rosenborg. RFK were amateurish against OL, basically long balls, half of which went out the side, and whenever they strung three passes together (except for about 20 minutes in the middle of the second half) the 3rd one went right to a red shirt!
olympiakos had technique, pace, tactics, patience, and motivation. OL had the same, just a bit more of each, especially when it counted. a bit of luck too? actually the luck was about equal, i think. they had some good chances, but their goal paradoxically came when OL looked well in place and there ddin't seem to be any danger.
here's one thing you have to know: when the greeks scored, everyone at gerland, on the pitch and in the stands, still felt we were going to win. we knew it! and how many kops will shout coupet!coupet!coupet! just after the team lets one in?
coupet - a big night. a couple of magical aerial grabs, 2 or 3 crucial stops. like always.
réveillère - went forward and combined adroitly with govou. never managed to shut down his corridor on defense, but repositioned fast enough to avoid any nasty crosses from the corner.
cris - very vulnerable due to lack of help on the wing, he was up to the task. a couple of poor passes (one almost catastrophic). almost no presence father out than 25 metres, but he had a fort to hold down!
caçapa - far from his best game, but as for cris with RVR, he got relatively little coverage from abidal. i didn't notice where he was on olympiakos goal, but it wasn't where he should have been, which was down kaves' throat.
abidal - i'd forgotten how fast he was! he makes malouda's job that much easier with those runs down the line. but didn't give claudio much help.
juninho - another free-kick goal? ho-hum... no i'm kidding. juni stepping up to the ball is like bonds stepping up to the plate. the whole place goes electric. and when it goes in (21 times so far), the explosion is that much more intense because of the suspense.
tiago - now it's clear, he's no essien. mike never let guys get by him 1 on 1 like that. but also, essien was no tiago: he just didn't have the head to distribute the ball that way, sometimes he's like a second juninho. his shot looked juninhesque too! and if anything he covers more ground than essien!
diarra - without essien (see under tiago) the pressure's on djila. OL only started to control the match when diarra started to control the middle. as he got better, everything got easier.
malouda - plenty of solutions down the left side, that's what he's there for. almost doubled the lead just after the juninho® strike. and i'm starting to notice something about him: i think he's on the same joe wieder diet that govou is on. he's muscling up!
govou - the man of the match, even before his goal! a couple of strong headers in the first half, and a bulldog on the right side and in the middle, and even on the left sometimes. and the goal? i was at the other end, but had just the right angle to see it was sweet-sweet-sweet. i probably won't get to see it on television soon, but i'm sure it will still pop up in some highlight show later this year or even in coming years!
fred - a header on a caviar cross from govou that he only missed by milliseconds. he'll be a good one when he learns to stay onside. OL wasted a lot of good work because of that.
carew came in for fred and was a very valuable anchor point. and in spite of malouda's new cornrows, he gets the hairdo prize. even cissé never looked that cool! wiltord also came very close to scoring, and in the final minutes stopped 3 greek breaks down the left side all by himself.

...

i just came across a curious fact: when diarra started his european career in greece, he only weighed 59kg; hard to believe when you look at the 76kg belle plante he is now!
if olympiakos' touré does the same, man that's gonna hurt someday!
i already mentioned that malouda seems to be beefing up. now if tiago ...

Did you just reference Joe Weider?
Rep for that as soon as it will let me. Nice analysis as usual Guignol.

Wow, so this is there best start ever I imagine.....
For all the anti-Houllier talk and Lyon getting lucky talk that is pretty amazing. I wonder why Houllier is as hated as he is? Rafael Benitez hasn't exactly turned Liverpool around. In fact, with the exception of the Champions League, Liverpool's domestic form has been aweful.... I mean Houllier always got them qualified for the Champions League, and he never sold Michael Owen for 8 million pounds either.

i was anti-houllier perhaps from guilt. i went on the same ginola hatetrip as him in 1993, and we were wrong. i've grown up, and now i realize he has too.
when you see how he seems to have handled the wiltord situation ("anyone but houllier"... remember?) you realize he must be a standup guy. he deals with the players differently from leguen, who earned a lot of respect by still being perhaps the best athlete on the club (always won the bike races and the foot-tennis matches, and a whiz at bull-in-the-ring) but they all seem to have a great time together at tola vologe.
