Is it a little too late for him to participate in Germany ? i have a feeling that Bruce will include him to the US roster for WC, let's just hope he will get back to where he was, intime for the WC.

I don't think he is motivated to be on the nats or in MLS. Maybe if he was motivated, he would get in shape. Or it could be physical. Maybe he has not fully recovered from his operations. But 3 goals of the week for 3 goals is a pretty good batting average, but not enough at-bats!

I don't dismiss it out of hand, but the odds are very long. The following will need to happen by the January camp and winter friendlies:
1. He gets himself fully fit for 90 minutes of international level soccer.
2. He demonstrates that he buys into Arena's high pressure tactics.
3. He regains his goalscoring form.
4. He beats out the other supersub/4th striker candidates in camp and friendlies performances. His competition is: Twellman, Wolff, Adu, and Herculez Gomez. (Assuming McBride, EJ, Ching go. But of course, s*** happens.)
5. He proves he can integrate into the attack with Donovan, Beasley, McBride, EJ, and Convey. Even when he was healthy and in form in 2001-02, he never really fit into our attack.
If he can do these five things, then he goes to Germany. Possible, but highly unlikely.

I don't even think its possible. When is he going to demonstrate to do all those things? In November or December? No.......No games. January/February/March? Once again, No....no games. It seems like he is extremely doubtful for the January camp due to his callups/recent form, etc.
So that means his chance would be to start out MLS preseason on an absolute tear and then follow that through for the first month of the season and hope that it catches Arena's eye prior to the world cup to bump someone else out of a spot?
I just don't see it happening.

I don't see it happening either, though I think it is possible. If Clint were ever to quit being such a phenomenal douchebag and really go all-in, it probably would not take too long for him to be back in the running. He could do a McBride-Everton type loan and actually give a sh!t about diet, training, tactics for a few months--that might just do it. Anyway, %99.9 that he is going to sit around, be worthless for the rest of his career. Every now and then he will have a few good weeks so that people will talk about him again, then he will resume being lazy and worthless.

So the WC starts next Summer right? That means he has about 6-8 months to get into shape AND impress Arena. If he can't get it done for RSL and be in great shape DURING the MLS season, then the chances of that happening is slim to none.

The talent is there, but he's burned his bridges with Arena. He's out of opportunities to prove to Bruce that he's capable.

if all the midfielders in MLS get hurt BUT Clint, he's got a chance. an outside chance. but a chance, nonetheless.

Why do you assume he doesn't care about diet, training, or tactics? Hmmm.

I'm not sure if you are kidding or not, but just in case you aren't--read his old interviews and the threads commenting on them. Too busy here to be posting links.

His chance was the 2005 MLS season. He came back home after playing in the Bundesliga and should have been able to thrive in a lesser league. Instead he had a crappy season, making more headlines with his mouth than with his game. I've always been a Mathis fan, but I can't imagine his getting back in the picture now. Had he come back and lit it up in MLS, I'd be singing a very different tune.

Now you're talkin'! In this circumstance I might- might - just put a little money on him. Not much money, mind you....

Who wants to start a collection to hire Clint a personal trainer? Forget tactics and style of play and all that...the man just needs to get in shape.
If he would just get in shape before the January camp, he'll find a way on the roster...because no American player strikes a free kick, either a cross or a long shot, anywhere close to Clint Mathis. Period.
But, alas, I just don't see it happening...such a waste. :(

Yes it is a waste. I am surprised by the lack of pressure put on him by the fans. It seems that there should be a much more significant Mathis-hating crew. For all the vitriol poured out against others for chickening out when it comes to pushing their respective games to a higher level, Mathis hasn't even pretended to try. Perhaps he needs a good hate mail campaign to motivate him.

The new soccernet article outlines many of the good reasons to hate him.

I think Clint would be best at a team where he is in danger of losing his job with poor performances. It should have been obvious to Ellinger, as it was to everyone else, that bringing Mathis in as a leader was a serious mistake.

He gets loaned to ADO Haag (RSL needs him off Checketts' books), saves them from relegation, scored a handful of highlight goals and forms a great partnership with JOB.
Voila. Job accomplished.
