"There are some players here who are not going to be playing [against Panama] but are still going be in position to make the World Cup team," Arena said the day before the match. "There are all sorts of variables. You have 11 starters which means you have 12 players who are not starting, and five or six of them never contribute. And they can't be the type of characters you don't want to have on the team. You see it in all sports, football players who walk off the field before the game is over, soccer players who do the same thing.

You may be right that Cunningham won't be included on the WC06 roster for that reason. But my guess is that Arena kept him with Colorado in the most recent camp because the Rapids were fighting for playoff position -- and not because of any personality issues.
It's really hard to speculate on the personality side of things with so little exposure to how Cunningham interacts with the rest of the squad in camp. But I wouldn't be at all surprised if he gets a few more shots at making the WC06 roster. Lord knows we need a healthy forward other than McBride who can put the ball in the net.

just say good-bye clint mathis. clearly one of the most talented that won't get into mix because of attitute and lack of intangibles. good problem, 10 years ago we would have to play and pick clint. clint grow up and figure it out.

Mathis has been out of the mix for a long time. Did you just wake up from a long hibernation?

I didn't see it as a "personality" issue per se just as a direct jab at Jeffro for walking out of the stadium when Clavijo took him out of the game a few weeks ago.
Since then, Clavijo hasn't even been starting him, though Cunningham came off the bench to assist on the game winning goal on Wednesday.
Still, he is clearly in Fernando's doghouse and, with Jeff's contract expiring at the end of the year, look at him try his luck in Europe somewhere.
Just not in the World Cup in Germany.

Do we want arrogant and pompous people associated with the team?

If they carry us all the way. Sure. If they just score the odd goal, and give a chance to beat the odd team then no.

I thought the exact same thing when I read that. And I am convinced it was on purpose.

well .... mathis got us a point in WC 02, which essentially sent us into the knock-out phases. IIRC clintinho wasn't exactly stellar the rest of his time. and we know he is an "interesting" lockerroom personality.
that's the thing. Cunningham may be an a-hole, but if he plays a total of 23 minutes, and scores one goal ... and that goal earns us 3 pts, 1 pt, or even a less embarassing loss and we advance on goal differential .... well, then, a-hole Jeffy was worth bringing.
again, if we had a reasonable reserve of quality, talented poachers, this wouldn't be an issue. but we don't: we have one proven scorer on the international level, another who was injured and yet to return to form, and another who can score, but doesn't play striker (LD).
that being said though, Cunny may not have shown himself to be "lights out" enough to offset his attitude problems.

He has tried his luck in Europe on several occasions, at some low levels, and there have been no takers. He will be the Meola of strikers. Talk forever, and try to go to Europe, while there will be no takers because he is so limited as a player. Can do it here, but not good enough for someone to cough an international spot up.
The guy still can't dribble with his head up for crying out loud.
Better believe he's not going to confirm that last sentence.

MOD, but hidden sarcasm as a personal attack is OK???
clint is a guy(who i imagine) blames everyone else for his shortcomings with teams in europe and the national team. he doesn't get it. i just wish he would because he could help the team with a new and improved attitutde.

I really just want to know if every player on the Brazil NT can actually play an instrument.

Agreed, but I think this one had some extra oomph in it.

Pele described batucada. On the bus ride players just made rhythms with whatever was at hand. Like drumming with a rolled-up piece of paper, etc.

Yeah, and the hand-holding thing when they come onto the field is a nice touch as well. But of course we can't do that because it means...
