interesting...wonder where the game will be at. The Niner's place or SBC Park? Maybe over the bridge in Oakland??

Great news......I like this idea so much because the mid-field play of Japan is wonderful and they have great mid-fielders.....One of the weaknesses of USMNT.....and I believe US has something to learn from this matchup.......

Remember the match-up of the USA v. North Korea at the U-17 world cup......
I mean the match-up with different style.....in that game the baby Nats struggled trying to adjust to their rhythm....and years ago US U-18 women's NT lost to their Japanese counterpart at HDC ( Phillips Invitational )...in that game the co-ordinated attack from Japanese midfield was so great, it just kept US on their heel...they just kept coming like kamikaze warplanes.

Nice scheduling for USMNT.......

Well it could be in San Jose. That still counts as San Francisco to some people (not me). Either way, I'll be at the game. YES!

They kind of leave it open. Saw the US vs. China in Oakland about 2001. SBC park may be interesting and I think they have held games there before. Candlestick always sucks for any type of event. Better to hold the game at UCB or Stanford than Candlestick.

Actually Japan played and beat the US before WC94. Score was like 3-1 or 3-0. US had a horrible own goal on a backpass that was chipped ober the keepers head and into the goal.
USMNT is not really taken seriously here in Japan. I have to defend them all the time.:)

There will be a good following of fans from Japan wherever the game is played. Last Sat. and Wed. there were friendlies in Latvia and Ukraine with a sizeable Japanese attendance. Wouldn't be surprised if they outnumber Sams Army.

I doubt it will be at Monster Park (49ers stadium). SBC Park might take a chance with the game since it's during the Giants off-season and they are eager to hold events. They've hosted a few Mexican teams in the past.

I wouldn't mind another game in Oakland but I don't think that will happen--attendance wise (in 2001 against China) was disappointing attendance wise. Spartan is due for another USA National Team game having been shut out in 2004.

I forgot about Stanford but it's been a very long time since they last held an event.

We'll see--I hope it happens.

Maybe the ticket prices had something to do with it. As I remember the cheapest ticket was like $40.

Stanford may be too big as it holds about 90,000.

Finally get to play them after they pulled out of the Seattle game in March 2003.

Nice, I can't wait! To get a large crowd there, I can definitely see the game being at SBC park. The japanese baseball fans always show well at Giants games, especially when a prominant japanese player is on the field, and I can only imagine that JMNT would bring in the same folks.

This is wonderful. Now I gotta put my money where my mouth is. I guess I'd better research Sam's Army. I will be there. Hope its at SBC. Is that a good soccer venue? Fantastic.

Likely a doctored photo for illustration purposes, but heres what the layout would probably be. By my figuring you should be able to get a full sized soccer field in there. Tight in the corners, but not Spartan tight.

I would assume the right and center field areas would be left unseated for this match.

I wasn't aware of that so I checked out their plans at gostanford.com. New stadium will hold 50,000. Could be a great place for Bay Area US games down the road, especially ones that would draw bigger crowds than that new Quakes stadium we all know will eventually get built (i hope i hope i hope).

Thanks for the heads up Noah. Nearly forgot about that.

I don't know if there will be any temporary stands if SBC Park gets to host the game. However, I know they add seats on the right field area for the Bowl game that is held there around the holidays. Given that it's the baseball off-season I would not be surprised at all and the people who run SBC will take anything that comes along to help pay for their loan--if it's a USA WC friendly they will.

The bet is the USA will probably field MLS players since it's the off-season but I would presume that maybe a few of the Euro based players might be called in.
