This ----> "The 29-year-old has had an impressive season so far in La Liga"

makes me think this rumor is a long shot at best. AW normally doesn't buy this old for position players. If Arsenal does not offer contracts of more than a year for players over thirty, I doubt the guy would leave for a 1 or 2 year deal.

Good point, but for me I think it is an even better reason for Arsène to do it. We need experience in the midfield, and a younger player with a longer contract would only hinder the development of and take more playing time from Cesc in the long term. I think it would be ideal to bring in some experience so that our young MFs could develop, yet on a short enough contract that the younger players wouldn't be discouraged about getting playing time and being able to start regularly in a year and a half or two.

I don't believe this at all...if Wenger was gonna go for someone this old, he could've went after Ballack. He won't sign a 29 yr. old.

He's a fairly dynamic holding midfield who has been consistently above average for Villareal. He doesn't score often but ironically scored what was probably the goal of the week in the last round of La Liga against Atletico. A beautiful cracker from outside the box.

This rumour is typical transfer fluff though... He'd only be a short term solution and only worth it if he came cheap.

...which...he would not, unfortunately.

Lets take someone who is haveing an amazing season at both club and country level. I submit 21 year old Fernando Torres. This guy is mowing down opponets for Spain and is leading Atletico in La Liga. Now he would cost in excess of 28 million pounds, but to have him for 5+ seasons, I would take him in a heartbeat.

Can we stop with the Torres nonsense...he is NOT worth 28-30m, I wouldn't pay anymore than what we did for Reyes. Now if we could get him for that it'd be a nice transaction, he's overhyped and therefore he comes with an inflated price tag. He's way too streaky and inconsistent to be spending upwards of 30m on.

okay, we wont spend that kind of money on anyone...
BUT... torres is overrated??? he is one of the finest young strikers in world football.. you're gilardino's, your adriano's, your rooney's...
so yes, a 30M quid transfer fee is not inflated, its the cost (unfortunately) of a world class striker.

just my opinion.

It's Villarreal, they're not rolling in it and he's 29, never been capped by Brazil or Spain (he holds spanish citizenship) so not exactly world class. £3-5 million would probably do it.. now whether you consider that cheap or not...

Anyway, it's a BS rumour to begin with.

Never said he was overrated...he's OVERHYPED by the Spanish media who overplay his potential and therefore he comes with a huge price tag, sorry but he's just not worth that type of money. Please don't put Torres in the same company as guys like Adriano, Rooney, Henry, or any other world class striker...he shows glimpses of brilliance but he doesn't do it consistently enough to warrant their prices. Gilardino went for 16m and hell even someone like Baptista who was blowing Torres away in La Liga only went for 18m...that is the price region he should be in, not this 30m crap. Sadly that's what it'd take to buy him though, he hasn't expressed an interest in leaving and Atletico don't want to sell him...it'd take a huge offer for them to consider it. Torres is a nice striker yes...worth blowing half our transfer kitty on? Ummm no.
