Interesting and potentially scary stuff.

I didn't realize shares have gone up so much. Man I should have invested in the club instead of all the other crap I lost money on.

"Unlike Manchester United, the Arsenal board exercise complete control and no takeover would be possible without their consent. When I spoke to Peter Hill-Wood, the Arsenal chairman, he said he had no fears of a takeover and the directors had no plans to sell. The directors, along with ITV, own 71 per cent of the club."

Dear Arsenal Board:

Please don't die guys, because if you do, your heirs may be hearing a big pay-day calling.

Yours,
The Gooner

This is definitely wild stuff.

If a yank wanted to buy shares (i.e. ME), would that even be possible? Could ArseAm become another small investor, essentially starting an "investors club" over here that sets up a PLC or something in the UK that could buy some shares? Not that that would stop any big-time players from making a move but it would be symbolic, and, it seems, also a good investment! Any international finance types lurking out there who could debunk my absurd idea?

Depends on the circumstances of any potential purchase. The fact that Gl*zer bought Man United isn't the problem per se. The problem is that he did it by taking out an extremely substantial loan with, as far as anyone knowledgeable in leveraged buyouts can tell, a very shaky repayment plan.

If these potential investors buy the club outright and provide an infusion of cash, it may have no overall effect, or even a positive one. Not that I'd be in favor of such a move necessarily. Arsenal have a pretty good business plan going, and the risks of any such takeover probably outweigh the benefits.

Frankly, I have trouble understanding the mentalities of some of these investors. Apparently they like to "buy high, sell even higher against reasonable odds," even if Arsenal at least have the new stadium and potential European success to increase the club's value.

I was thinking the same thing. I worked for a trading company in high school and I so some wealthy men lose and make a ton of money and they never took gambles like this.

I wouldn't worry too much about it. It's a scaremongering article from a Spurs supporter. Basically it's saying that anything that you personally don't own can be sold. Arsenal FC are in a much moer secure position that Manu were...

Haha, I do read arseblog 1st thing every morning actually, but didn't bother to read the piece from the telegraph, until I saw a 2nd link here. Mihir Bose is fairly well known as a Spurs fan, and has written pieces previously which are angled towards winding up Arsenal fans...

Yeah, but not quality enough to get me to drop $200 on them!
