Ok, what I want people to do in this thread is to throw down a band and a song that you can get off of Kazaa for us to check out. (If you absolutely have to, list two songs.) I love hearing new bands and new music so I'll probably check out everything that's posted here.
Give a brief description of the band, where they are from, what type of music it is, etc... and we should get some replies going on the bands and songs posted. I know the rest of you like myself have probably 20 bands, but if you list 10 bands, most people will only check out a few, so it's not too benificial to list a bunch all at once, wait for some others to chime in first.
I'll start....
Pomeroy - Roboflow
... Band from the Manhatten (KS), Lawrence/KC, Omaha triangle. Some people claim they are the next 311, but I don't see it. They are a great band but I don't see how they are like 311 if you listen to a lot of their songs. They are basically white boy funk/hip-hop. Their shows are amazing cause they have Shug and Mickey (who I've known since Kindergarten) break-dance up on stage during some of their songs and the atmosphere it creates is like nothing I've seen before. They have huge followings in Lawrence/KS, Omaha, Manhatten, and St. Louis and it's spreading like crazy. Every show is typically sold out in those cities.
Anything But Joey - Girl Roomate
.... Band from KC who is becoming labeled as the most promising act in KC to go national. Personally I don't really like them but a lot of people in KC are starting to and maybe some of you will like them too. Last I heard Jive Records (Britney's, N'Sync's, and The Backstreet Boys' label) offered them a contract but they turned it down, so props to them.
The Get up Kids - Central Standard Time
... Band from KC who I'm sure plenty of you have heard of, but figured I'd at last throw them out there for those of you who haven't yet. It's typically a band you either love or hate, just like the whole emo genre I guess.
Sunny Day Real Estate - 8
.... Band from the Sub Pop era of Seattle grunge. Lots of you have heard of this band but I don't feel they have recieved the recognition they deserve as their Diary album is one of my favorite all time CD's. They have I think 4 CD's out and one more due out in the next couple months which I am definately looking forward too.
So there's four bands to get you started. I listed mostly bands from the KC area because those are the ones I think are hardest to hear about if you live elsewhere. Lemme know what you think.

The Chris McCarty Band. A few guys who were going to school/living in the Gainesville area started this band. They've gotten sorta big (not much) in the Southeast. The drummer is a friend's brother.
They have a jazzy/blues type of sound. I don't know. It's hard to describe. Just listen to them.

They broke up. Jeremy Enigk has a new band called the fire theft, without Dan Hoerner and they have a new album coming out soon.

My friend's band, Sandbox Heroes. Best band from Canton, MI ever!!! They aren't on Kazaa but they have three mp3's up on mp3.com. Honestly Angel is their most popular song, it gets regular air play on all of the local high school radio stations.

The Paradise Vendors - Quality local guitar pop band - and I'm not just saying that because I know them. I think they've slowed down on the amount of shows they do (they played a lot in clubs between New Haven and NYC in the past few years), what with things like real jobs, but I like their stuff.
Check out 'Spy in the house of love' and 'I'm in love'

A bonus point to whoever gets what novel their name is from.

Hah, what's this like the 3rd time now? I thought Fire Theft was the name of the new CD. Oh well, as long as Jeremy is singing I'm sure it will be typical SDRE.

Hah... chalk one up for Davids26. Definately a Scremo band. I mean, you can tell these guys are from High school, and the quality is kinda crappy, but give them a few years and a good recording and I think they could do something. I really like the style of guitar. It's got a kind of Hum sound to it if you guys remember them. The vocals are pretty good. As a drummer who's been in a bands at that age, I understand the desire to play a little bit more than neccesary and I think that's what I believe this drummer does.
Good job. That's what I'm trying to get out of this thread.

Ehhh... a little too poppy for me and typically if it's pop usually I'll only listen to it if it's punk, and that's an iffy.
Anyone else listen to this stuff?

I'll go ahead and throw in another band
That Capsules
... Formerly Shallow in the mid-90's. From Lawrence, KS. Shallow had a lot of success touring with all of Lallapolooza in '96, multiple European tours and tours with the Flaming Lips and Garbage. It's funny cause they were actually asked to make a song for Spongebob on Nick, although they turned it down (thank god!). The girls voice is a very innocent one. The guitar really is mellow and flows very well with Julia's voice (not too suprising considering she plays the guitar for the band) and the drummer is great. Not in the sense that he's a better drummer than Danny Carey or whoever, but just because he understands his role with this style of music. He's actually a percussionist for the KC Symphony which might explain a lot.
You can hear two of their songs on their website www.thecapsules.net. It sounds pretty much just like what Shallow did, I think all they replaced is their dummer.

not really unknown or a band, but has anyone heard The Rough Guide's Arabesque?
Sort of hip-hop and dance beats with Arab music collected onto a cd for those who haven't come in contact with it (mostly French/N. Africa stuff, but there is a lebanese band on there). Just wondering if the CD is worth a purchase.

Here's another one: Slycee Jenkins
http://www.slyceejenkins.com/
They play the Boston and Providence area and have released 2 albums, the second of which I have, and it's pretty good. Kind of an alt-pop sound, though that's pretty vague. Maybe a mix of Luna and REM gets closer? A friend of mine played accordian for them on a few tracks on their last album, and has since apparently reinvented himself as a keyboardist and joined the band full time. In talking to him the other night, he said he had been talking a lot with Bill Campion of The Bogmen, and they are trying to get together for a gig in Attleboro in the next fews weeks. Anyway, I'd check out the title track to their last album: "Slow Down Mr. Grenadine" There's an mp.3 file of it on their website.
Don't watch that video though! It's horrendous...

I bought it several years ago (if it's the same CD as the one I've got, and I think it is, which was originally compiled out of a North African restaurant in London called 'Arabesque'). It's fantastic, I think. I tend to like a lot of Arabic music-meets-techno projects anyway, but I really liked this one. Like I said in another thread, the Natacha Atlas song on this one ('Kidda') is one of the sexiest songs that I've ever heard (not that you needed to know that, jamison ;))

I was referring to a different CD - this one :
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00000JAZ3/qid=1040436765/sr=2-1/ref=sr_2_1/103-5661501-5995046
I especially like the Natacha Atlas, Gnawa Diffusion and Stereo MC's tracks.

Oh, and the restaurant isn't called 'Arabesque, I don't think.
And yes, that camel on the cover freaks me out a little too.

1 band that even had the title from R.S. as the "bet band you've never heard of" and one of my favorites is Luna. Here's their website:
www.fuzzywuzzy.com
And here's a cool site from a devoted fan:

They are usually compared to the Velvet Underground but that's simplistic. Great guitar work, intelligent & sometimes offbeat lyrics and they really put on a great live show. Everything that current music is definitely NOT about.

Depends on how you define 'current music'.

Luna's a good band, but their cd Romantica sort of sucked. I hear their latest is better, but I haven't heard it, yet. Pup Tent's a good song and is much better on Luna Live than on the cd Pup Tent, in my opinion.

Anyone want to suggest some songs from these bands that you can get either from their websites or Kazaa?
