Since there has been so much discussion about this in the most recent weekly update thread (http://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/showthread.php?t=249256) it seemed like time we started one of these.

Here are some of the suggestions (both flippant and serious) that have been thrown out there so far:

Barons
Bavarians
Bayern Milwaukee
Beer Barons
Bees
Muskies
Riders
Sawzalls
Warriors

Discuss! Enjoy!

I like Barons and Bavarians. While I would have loved to see "Warriors" I think that would look like it was pandering to Marquette alums disaffected by the disaster the University went through back in May.

I really don't like Bavarians, Bayern Milwaukee, Bees, Sawzalls. Other than that, I don't care.

Yes, whatever happens dont let the Marquette trustees run the name selection process :D

I would want the name to be more like fcdallas than the earthquakes

I still think that the Milwaukee Beast would be a great name. It alludes to Milwaukee's beer past but isn't overt.

I'm fine with anything that's not:

Milwaukee SC
Inter Milwaukee
Milwaukee United
Milwaukee City
Milwaukee Rangers

if we are going to steal something from another league we should go with:

Milwaukee Grampus Eight

SC in SF

Make sure the Orca is in your logo (piss off the Sounder fans too).

Does Baron's have a specific link to Milwaukee that I don't know about? Beer Barons?

Sawzall's was clever, whoever came up with that. Great tools, Milwaukee (though you should buy Makita because they support MLS  ).

Well, sort of. In general, I don't like re-posting my own material, but this is in another thread and basically sums up why the name kinda works for Milwaukee:

I don't like "Beer Barons," either; it's too long, kinda awkward, and too simplistic in what it says about MKE.

Which is why I originally proposed just plain "Barons." Milwaukee Barons FC would honor the great families who founded the city and made it into what it is today: Lots of brewers, of course, like Schlitz, Pabst, Miller, Gettelman and Blatz, but other families, too, whose names still dot the architectural landscape of the city, Pfister (a hotel, of course, but Pfister was a tanner) Plankinton (a banker), Marquette, Juneau, as well as unnumerable "baronial" families whose names you might not know, like Harnischfeber, Downer, Hinton, Peck, Senn, Conroy, Lipps, Mitchell (a banker/businessman whose grandson was the Gen. Billy Mitchell the airport was named after), McGeogh, Trostel, Wells (wealthiest man in WI a century ago), McIntosh.

Well, you get the idea. Pick up a copy of John Gurda's history of the city and you'll find many of the details. The point is that Milwaukee's always been a city, even today, where things get made. Beer, of course, but an incredible, array of other products, as well. The things made in the city pulled in the immigrants who gave the city its rich ethnic neighborhoods, myriad festivals that populate every summer weekend and some of its signature buildings, like St. Stan's, the first Polish church in urban America.

Maybe we should call ourselves the Beers, have La-Z-Boy make our first game ball and have a cheer that goes, "Chug, chug, (puke)!"

I'm all for "Dozen Egg Night" as a promotion as well.

And we can't forget a beer barrel mascot who can take a leak through his tap.

Seriously though, I do think we need to come up with a cool name surrounding a beer theme. The reason our breweries became so strong and wealthy was because of the Chicago Fire--suddenly our breweries had two cities to supply with beer because all of Chicago's breweries burned down. That and Peter's connection really makes a beer name apropos. It would be like the Chicago Fire "building" our breweries again.

I'm lukewarm about "Barons", it doesn't quite seem as bad as "Crew" to me (which seems like some dumb marketing guy's idea that five years later everybody can only shake their head about and say, "What the hell were we thinking?!?!?"), but I don't it's "there" yet. Beer Barons could be alright for the supporters group, though.

Haha. I don't see how the name Crew makes sense, but I honestly like it. Guess its that kind of weird to me.

I think Barons is pretty good. But not being from Milwaukee I don't have any other alternatives.

What else is important to Milwaukee history?
