In most of the world's top domestic soccer leagues, problems like this are skirted because games aren't scheduled on weeks when the countries' national teams are scheduled to play. But MLS doesn't have that luxury. Most of its teams are tenants in their home stadiums, thus forcing the league to schedule around the plans of the venues' owners.
Reason #10,543,234,422 why the San Jose Earthquakes needs its own South Bay SSS!

Mullan will be part of a unit that will remain the most intact for the Earthquakes, the midfield. The only change will be in the middle, where rookie Danny O'Rourke will replace Clark. O'Rourke will play alongside Dwayne De Rosario. Mark Chung, back from a weekend of vacationing in Florida, will be on the left.
So Chung will be back. The article from the Quakes website made it seem like Russell would be starting again. :D

Yes. And I am rather ticked that I can't record this WCQ because it's at the same time as the RSL game. I'd like to see if our guys get to play and how they do.

Waiting so long to make his first MLS start, he said, was "a little frustrating. But I’ve got Wade Barrett in front of me. I did my best to learn from Wade all season -- the professionalism, the day-in, day-out work rate, the turnovers in the mid-field."

Fixed the article.

FC Dallas is playing today in their soccer specific stadium and the Crew are playing (on the road). having your own stadium doesn't mean this problem won't occur. MLS still makes the schedule and still schedules games on the weekends of WCQ's .... and a stadium won't change that.

but it would still be cool to sit in a new stadium and b!tch about it. :D
