Clearly, I'm in the minority. I think they suck - unoriginal, one hit 'wonders'. As evident in the previous 'last concert attended' thread a good # of you think they are a great band.

Please clue me in to what makes them 'great'.

thanks,
gp

They're not so bad, I'm not too much a fan though. They tend to recycle AC/DC and Beatles riffs and melodies and use their arrangements as well. At least those are two great bands to model yourself after.

Sometimes it just boils down to if a band is fun to listen to or not. If it didn't we'd all be classical and prog rock fans.

I'd actually be a polka fan if that was the case. what's more fun than some polka?

it's not like somebody's gonna make a convincing arguement here that's gonna make you change your mind. just like nobody on here will ever convince me that radiohead and coldplay are anything other than complete sh!t.

either you like them or you don't. sometimes there's no reason to go searching for answers beyond that.

it is possible....but thanks for your input:rolleyes: I'm open minded when it comes to music...if someone truely believes in a band and is convincing enough, I WILL check it out (I prefer specific recommendations).

I too thought radiohead was crap until I really sought to understand them. 'OK, Computer' is brilliant. 1 year ago I would have agreed with you.

I think there's always a reason to go beyond whether you like something or not, after all, its exactly that which gives you the initial instinct, sometimes is a conscious effort, sometimes its a subconscious one, but there's a reason for everything.

if you're gonna post a question, don't roll your eyes when somebody provides their answers. it makes you look like a jerk, which I'm sure you're not. :)

if you're open-minded when it comes to music, listen to it again and decide for yourself. if you don't like it, move on.

I can understand that opinion, but I'm from the school that over-analysis can kill the joy of enjoying certain things. I know exactly why I enjoy certain bands, songs, or albums, but there are some songs that on the surface seem totally contrary to what I like, or what appeals to me, that I just flat-out enjoy.

For example, I love Supertramp's "Breakfast In America" album. I couldn't pinpoint for you why. The lyrics are corny, the tunes totally do not rock or swing, the production is tinny, and a few songs feature a clarinet for cripes sake. But I cannot turn off a song from that record if it comes on the radio. And I really don't care to know why.

I totally hear ya, I feel the same way about many songs and even films, However its just my nature to over analyze, even if that can be bad sometimes. Like I said, most of out opinions are formed purely on our subconscious, its our personal choice whether to delve deeper into them or not. :D

Jet isn't really the kind of band where you would sit around analyzing their musical styles and lyrical meanings. They're meant to be some combination of catchy, cheeky, and a purposely dumb. Beyond that, there just isn't a whole lot to argue.

A lot of people argue that such and such band is "derivative". Rock and roll is derivative by nature; very few bands out there are really and truly original. And there isn't a damn thing wrong with the ones who are.

They are like the Vines but with more boring songs and a vocalist who doesn't act retarded.

I think the Vines are better, at least they're willing to experiment with different genres, but those kids also still have to get their sh!t together.

I agree.

Me too.....but I also agree with Ringo's point that it's all about personal tastes. I got into an argument with Karl K once (go figure) about why I THOUGHT Radiohead was good.....and he was determined to pick a fight about how music could be objectively good rather than subjectively.....pointless, IMHO.

Okay....sorry for the eye roll. Must be the NY'r in me...at least I didn't call him a rat-fink or tell him to fook off... ;)

He assumed my musical taste was concrete when infact it is not. If he didn't like the question, he should not have answered it. I, personally, wanted to find out if anyone here is a die hard Jet phan and if so why. I can be persuaded by informative arguments in favor of a band.

I have to disagree with you on your opinions on Jet - but I do agree with you on your position on polka. But like others have said here, its hard to say what makes them a good band. I don't know why I like them while you don't. Maybe its an age difference? Or perhaps I like them because they were great in concert, and I enjoyed listening to their album. I thought they were among the best bands that have come out in the past few years, but granted, the compeition isn't that great.
Now, if Jet came out with a album that was polka-influenced, would it change your mind?
