Don't be annoying. It is perfectly fine to put names such as Del Piero, Ibra and Rooney into the best strikers list. As long as they are clearly not attacking midfielders (Kaka) or wingers (Messi) then we can call them strikers. Some people call players like Del Piero second strikers, showing that they are in fact, a type of striker.
Players are dynamic and positions are nominal.
There is little difference between an attacking midfielder and a support striker/forward when you examine their role in the side, the attributes they require and the area of the pitch they operate in. However there is a big difference between them and strikers, who we are supposed to be discussing. For starters, and perhaps more importantly, their fundamental roles are different. There are a few players who crossover but they are few and far between.

Anelka is not in that top class. Zlatan and Adebayor should be rated higher
He's the top scorer in arguably the best league in the world of football right now.

But he also misses a lot of easy shots. Tell me, would you rather have Anelka or Torres on your team?

An interesting question. I wonder which striker is the best at evening games and whether certain strikers excel at lunchtime games?

Interesting area to look at but it would involve going through a minefield of problems first. Team strength, length of time between fixtures (notably European ones to early Premiership kick-off), etc... I'm game if you are statto. God I wish that programme was still on-air.

I think he's a good example how numbers aren't all to define the best striker.

It depends. The fundamental role of a striker is to score goals. Obviously there are other factors to consider but goal scoring remains the most important. Most of us like to talk about other attributes like the ability to bring others into the game through the creativity of strikers like Ibrahimovic and Berbatov or the hold-up play of strikers like Toni and Drogba. I fully understand that but it should be noted that despite this if their goal scoring was not at an acceptable rate (which differs from club to club) then they would not be the main striker at their club. The example that usually gets used is Man Utd's shift from Van Nistelrooy (in my view the best striker of his generation) to Saha. We all know the reasoning behind it but the fact remains that Saha was still expected to provide goals and, if he could not, then he would not have been made the main striker.
I rate Anelka but in the second tier of strikers. One his day he can be superb but consistency and his attitude have always been problems. He has matured an awful lot (notably since he joined Bolton) but it will take a few seasons of consistent scoring for Chelsea before he redeems himself.

I'm in part agree, I also think the most important factor to a striker is scoring and is a fundamental role, but most to consider the effectiveness in a specific team system and not with the high importance to compare one to one directly (when are in similar cathegories), and not only about other abilities to each one, also because I believe the prolific numbers have different degrees of dependence from him and from his team, and the form to score goals for one or another have different levels of credit to the scorer.
I know that really doesn't have importance to his team when his objetive is score goals whatever was the form, but I think is important when we try to compare them directly.

it can't be just about goals scored. you have to take in consideration how many chances wasted before they got the goal. for instance, Jo had a streak of games where he was scoring for man city which looked great on paper but in actuality he was missing many easy chances created by SWP and Robinho that are not accurately reflected on stat sheets (and you cant just look at number of shots vs goal scored either because it doesnt specify the difficulty of the shots) A better example is Henry who does not have a bad scoring record with Barca but has been extremely wasteful and missing shots that even amateur strikers would put away. Point being you cant simply look at goals stats even if the main criteria is goals scored, and that's why watching the players and their shooting form is key.

I love pintorichio, but he is not the best. Samu Eto'o is being a beast right now, which is wat the thread is about, him or villa imo are the best, cant see any other. Now as in the past two or three weeks.
