Ruud was always a better finisher but to have a striker who can score and pass the ball as well as move with amazing pace is special. I know Henry has not been fit and his play is not what it was but I would give him a bit more time to prove match fitness before saying he is done for.

The fundamental role of a striker is to score goals.

IIRC, Henry had something like 33 assists one season. Insane.

Take 10 off of that total and I think you would be correct. Plus Henry's official assist figures are nothing special when you contrast them to other players (the likes of Totti being but one example).

Torres and Adebayor are certainly pure class but none the less are young and developing strikers. I can not say I would rate a single striker in the Premiership right now in the class of a fit Trez, Zlatan, Ruud, Henry, or Klose.

I would agree. Drogba lead the league in scoring last season but he only scored 20 league goals. That was the lowest total since 99/00.

Don't want to drag all this up again but C. Ronaldo is not a striker... no one would disagree with you that he's one of the best players in the world right now, and one of the best goal scorers.

Correct, as Ronaldo is a forward. The point being that countless other forwards have already been mentioned in this thread. You could even make the argument that Henry is a forward when you consider what his usual role was at Arsenal and his style of play. How is it any different to what Ronaldo does?

Except that he's not. Ibrahimovic and Ronaldo are the top scorers in the CL with 5 goals each.

Correct.

If Fabiano isn't the leading scorer (I don't watch sevilla)....then this is where I saw that he had 7 CL goals. Perhaps I shouldn't be sourcing this website?

Anyways, I checked it out game by game, and you're right....seems like he only has 4 goals. Anyhow, I thought I'd clarify where I sourced the information. Don't want to discredit myself as soon as I join.

That site has included qualifying goals in their total.

The fundamental role of a striker is to score goals.

But who is the more valuable striker, the player who nets 25 times in a season or the player who bags 15 goals and sets up 15 more?

That question was hypothetical, by the way. Based on no actual stats and I'm certainly not arguing that Henry is currently a more valuable player than van Nistelrooy.

There is also no way of answering that question with any level of accuracy because it all depends on how important the goal or assist was to the team and the result. Adding a couple of assists when thrashing a side is great but scoring the solitary goal in a victory is far more important. We could go around in circles trying to discuss the point. For me a striker should be judged primarily on his goals because that is their fundamental role. Anything else is an added bonus but depends entirely on the rest of their team. The Van Nistelrooy/Saha discussion of threads past is the perfect example. There is no question that the former is clearly the superior striker but what the latter brought to the table, albeit with a reduced goal figure, was better for the rest of the team.
