Something I never expected to see.
8 years. That's a lot of coke though.

This is very sad. I went to quite a few of the home and away games in '86 and he was such a livewire, very exciting with as hard a shot as any top-class player. Why did he have to get into such depths?

However, after this sad news - there is some better news. Gabbidon and Collins have won 2005 welsh player of the year and young player of the year respectively. Well done lads.

Great news, and very well deserved, particularly Gab.

I enjoyed watching him play in that team very much too. It is, as you say, a very sad story.

I don't find it a sad story at all. If he was supplying kids with coke then he deserves more than 8 years. Bloody jerk. There is a lot of misery tied up in that amount of coke.

If you want sad it is Ronnie Barker dying. After all he did his porridge without complaining.

I am not condoning it blaine....the sadness lies in the fact that he allowed himself to be drawn into these circles. I agree that he deserves everything he gets for the crime, and maybe should have got more. And I certainly echo your sentiments regarding Ronnie Barker - he will be missed greatly.

Yes,it's a final goodbye from him.

Not sad though. He bought too much happiness to too many people for that. A question for the anally retentive. Does anyone know how to access the sketch where he plays a vicar telling a parable in rhyming slang about the good samaritan saving an abandoned Richard from the pavement?

No,sorry. But I remember the sketch. When he said Richard the Third people didn't realize he was using the slang for bird and not Turd.

I remember Mark Ward too. I went to see him play for the Hammers in about '88-89ish. It was a home match against Derby and still remains the only match I have wayched from the UP stands.

It ended 1-1 but, as usual, there was an incident with Mark Ward.

He chased a ball rolling towards the keeper, even though it was about 70/30 in Peter Shilton's favour to get it. Shilton gathered the ball and Ward crunched into him.

Naturally the ref blew and Shilton just lay still for a few seconds. By this time everyone in the terraces were saying 'He's dead!!'.

He didn't die, of course, and Ward got booked.

I suppose this is just typical of the sort of bloke he is.

I'm sorry, but I find it incredibly sad that a profesional sportsman who many kids looked up to when he was playing, turned into someone as desperate as this. If his demise doesn't touch you at all then fair enough - it does me.
And please don't get me wrong - I think he deserves everything he gets as well.

We won't ever see another comic like Ronnie Barker. His BAFTA acceptance speech after Richard Beckinsale's death gets me every time I see it.
He meant more to my life than Mark Ward or pretty much any West Ham player. I feel for his family.
(And I always thought he was talking about turds).
