OK, let's try this again. Here are my predictions for Best Picture nominations as of 12/18/02:

Gangs of New York - Best Picture from AFI, #3 from Nat'l Board of Review; likely to have massive box office opening; Daniel Day-Lewis getting major buzz for acting awards

The Hours - Best Picture from NBoR; lots of acting awards for Julianne Moore

Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers - #2 film from AFI; minimum of $200-300 million box office; reviews say it's better than the original

Far From Heaven - BP from NY Film Critics Circle; runner-up from NY Film Critics Online and LA Film Critics

Chicago - Best Picture from NY Film Critics Online, #2 film from NBoR; fulfills Academy's need to offer a BP nod to something off-center every year, thus allowing them to not nominate the dopey My Big Fat Greek Wedding.

Left off: About Schmidt (Nicholson gets best actor nom & award), Adaptation (Kauffman gets nom for screenplay), Talk To Her, Y Tu Mama Tambien (both get best foreign film noms), The Pianist, 8 Mile, Road To Perdition, Catch Me If You Can.

Replace Gangs of New York and put About Schmidt instead and I agree with you. My feeling is The Two Towers will win Best Picture.

I think Julianne Moore in Far From Heaven will edge out Julianne Moore in The Hours. Lot of media folks think the Oscar is hers to lose.

Correction, The Two Towers will run away with the Best Picture award, not to mention a bevy of other awards. It's a visually stunning, emotionally compelling movie.

Golden Globe nominations announced:

Best Musical / Comedy: About A Boy, Adaptation, Chicago, My BFGW, Nicholas Nickleby

Best Drama: About Schmidt, Gangs of New York, The Hours, LOTR: The Two Towers, The Pianist

Chicago led all nominees with eight, The Hours with seven, Adaptation with six.

The only big surprises are that About Schmidt was considered a drama instead of a comedy, and Far From Heaven wasn't nominated in the BP category.

As far as the best actress award, Moore seems to be a lock for either of her two movies, but don't count out Diane Lane in Unfaithful, which I have not seen but is supposed to be a knockout.

Considering LOTR's trilogy, would the Academy give a Best Picture award to a film that has neither a beginning nor an ending?
