i'm really leaning towards staying in Europe longer and not squeezing the side trip into the middle of being in London, so it would be from wednesday Feb 1st through Sat the 4th. the saturday might be a straight travel day, from Leon or Amsterdam to London then back to Chicago.

Looks like you're out of luck on Ajax football then. They play Feyenoord in Rotterdam on the 5th.

By public transport? At least an hour and a half. British Rail = teh suck.If they take the train, I should imagine it would take well over an hour and a half. They'll have to take 2 trains, as well as get between Waterloo and Paddington somehow. The 2 express trains would also cost a ton.
There's a charter-type bus (coach) between Gatwick and Heathrow; the folks on flyertalk.com recommend allowing at least 2 hours.
But I'm not from around there, so I could be wrong.

i think that the coach is like 17 pounds and they say to give yourself 70-90 minutes for the journey itself. its probably more like 2 or 3 hours

It very much depends on the M25. Depending on what time you go, if the motorway (That's an expressway or interstate to you lot before anyone starts) is clear then it could "only" be an hour.

true, but yesterday it wasn't bad. 40 minutes to get home from Schaumberg at 6 PM! and this morning Irving Park Rd was a breeze. took 45 minutes to get to work, usually its an hour!
