Our captain was on Real Sports today discussing racism in European football. I think it re-airs tonight. Very interesting. They talked about racist actions at football grounds all over Europe and what is being done to stop them.

While I find it disgusting that fans do that to Black players, HBO and REAL SPORTS can go F themselves. Gumble and company NEVER talk about soccer unless its to throw a negative spin on it. I bet the WC will come and go again and "REAL" Sports wont even notice. Either cover the sport fairly or not at all. Don't just keep throwing negative things out there so that Joe 6-Pack has more ammo against soccer.

You are wrong actually. They cover soccer in a positive light more than you'd expect. I remember one positive story they did on a soccer program in Haiti(I think, could have been another island nation). They did a positive story on homeless soccer that covered the game in NY and their world cup. They had a segment on the Iraqi national team.
Of course, since the show often shows the negative side of all the sports they cover, there have been plenty of less positive segments as well. They did a segment on stats on head injuries and soccer. Then there are fluff pieces. They've covered guys like Beckham that the general American audience might know. Real Sports had a funny one on that serial streaker guy that had plenty of soccer.
HBO is also coming out with a program on women's soccer in the US called "Dare to dream". Hard to argue that HBO or RealSports is somehow anti-soccer. Its not a sports program like the kind you'd find on ESPN or FSC so you're barking up the wrong tree if you expect to find standard World Cup coverage here.
"Interesting" trivia: HBO has even shown NASL games in the channel's early days.

I agree. He did a thoughtful piece on Kasey Keller and Brad Friedel a while back that I thought was good. Although whenever Bryant Gumbel mentions racism on his show I keep waiting for someone to say "If you're so open-minded and against racism, why won't you date black women?"

I disagree too. They are very fair. Real Sports tends to focus either on the really good or the really bad, its the nature of the show.
I say the Henry on Real Sports last night, and I have got to say they showed Henry in a very positive life, obviously his stand of racism is positive, but overall Henry looked quite the statesman.
There was an interest note on the video. Many of the areas, particularly of Spain and Italy that were the really guilty like in a place where many of the many offending fans have never seen a black person in person, other than the match. I find that interesting. Education is important is getting rid of this problem, so how do you educate someone with little exposure the subject you are wanting to educate, other than marketing.

There's the discussion on the subject over in Business and Media...alot of nonsense criticism of HBO, in my opinion. Glad to see that most here on this board have more common sense! :)

Good point, but that's how he got from his last wife to the current one.

Any of you listen to Howard Stern? They just got done talking about this story from Real Sports... they played several clips of the monkey chants, etc..
Such great publicity for our sport...
