Does anyone know why they're referred to as "Stiffs"?

Have seen the term on a number of sites and can't for the life of me work out where it comes from

And please, no jokes... :D

You really do walk into these situations T. :)

I had just started to construct a sentence in my head which included the words bath, sending off, PDC, soap, jelly...oh yes and dream, when I read the last part about not cracking any jokes.

Booo..... :p

I don't know but I'll take a stab at it. Being in the reserves would mean that you were 'stiff' to miss out on the first team.

Kind of makes sense but the expression being stiff meaning unlucky etc may be an Aussie term, I not too sure.

Anyway at least it's an attempt.

Cheers

Stiffs is slang for dead bodies. The reserves are filled with the corpses of has beens and failures.

I didn't know either so I emailed the club, this is the reply from Tony Bellchambers (marketing) :

Hi Brian,
Good question, and I have to admit I don’t know I have asked two people in are media dept and they don’t know I also “asked jeeves and nothing there either, but all is not lost.

Try Google then type in stiffs then a space then reserves, the explanation is middle of the road players/wannabe’s or has/been.

Hope this helps.

Regards Tony
