As you may or may not be aware, Verizon is entering the territory of cable and satellite companies, and will be bringing TV services over fiber optic network to many places in the country. (FiOS TV should hit California, Florida, and Virginia by the end of 2005.)

Anyway, they plan to offer both ESPN Deportes and ESPN2-HD when they become available (in the Hispanic tier and HD tier respectively).

This is looking like a mini-victory for Disney over the hegemony of Comcast - Time Warner - DirecTV - DISH. Verizon will be going after many other content providers aggresively.

If TWC does not offer ESPN2HD by next summer in time for the World Cup, I may have to take a serious look at Verizon's new service, assuming it is available in southern California by then.
From the multichannel article:
Verizon's channel lineup also includes a gaudy 22 HD channels, including eight broadcast stations, eight premium networks and six other networks, such as Turner Network Television and Discovery Channel.
22 HD channels? Very cool. Hopefully the line-up will include HDNet and INHD1&2. I need HDNet for the MLS and the occasional USNT games.

Most places where Verizon is set to lay FiOS probably won't get FiOS TV service until late 2006. What I've read is that it's at least 6 months from the time when they finish laying the fiber to TV services going live. It's going to be nice when it does, though.

Please don't even post something like that! TWC is the only option I have here to watch WC2006 in HDTV. They MUST have ESPN2HD by May 2006 or I'll be pulling some strings (most likely my hairs). It would be nice to see the next CL final in HD on ESPN2HD, as well.
