Why is the guy throwing the ball in never guarded? Just curious. In Basketballhe is considered the most dangerous person on a throw-in. In soocer, inevitably, he gets the ball back.
PS- Univ of Md got jobbed in the semis!!!! hahahaha

As a keeper, I always tell my defenders to mark up the thrower.

It you follow UMd and ask this question, then it seems to me that you are saying that the terps don't guard the thrower. That surprises me as the 4 years I was there, that was a Criovski tactic.
As for stragety, it depends on the coach. But there are laws that govern the game that will influence the stragity. In either case, this questions should be moved.
Mods - can you move this to either the coaching or ref forum?

What I see most often is the defending team will position a player on the boundary line to limit the thrower's follow through on to the field of play. The hope I suppose is to limit the power and accuracy. By the way, the UMD thrower is Kenny Bertz who routinely throws the ball 40+ yards on a line. His throws are actually more dangerous than corner kicks with the big kid Goodson roaming the box.

Only in America do they even think about throwins in any other terms than just getting the ball back into play. We spend as much time setting up throwins as if it's a direct kick from the top of the box. No need.

Spain scored a beautiful goal against someone in the World Cup that was simply a case of the thrower being unmarked. I do wonder why the rest of the world doesn't seem to understand the long throw-in. I'd say it's a part of the game that is more developed in the US than elsewhere. "No need"? A throw-in is a restart, and all restarts need to be rehearsed.
