*************************
I can't comment much on the movies, as I've only seen one (About a Boy) on the list. As for the shows, I'm guessing that this panel has a sensibility close my own, as the first four listed here are pretty much the only shows I watch. Perhaps I should check out the other 6?
Anyway, I like the brief description of the panel and the method. There's actually freakin' deliberation over these things! And the mixed panel of professors, journalists, artists, and money people is a good thing.

How did "The Shield" not make the top 10? now that's a good show.

Boomtown and Six Feet Under are great shows, and I've been known to watch Gilmore Girls from time to time ;) uhh, only because my fiancee watches it, yeah that's it.

Two Towers hasn't even come out yet. Don't they mean Fellowship?

Believe me, they've seen it. They aren't restricted by the public release dates.

I saw "Frida" and thought it was really good.
I absolutely refuse though to believe that "Chicago" could be in the top 10.

They've turned into a home video/DVD promotion tool for a consortium of major studios. Take a look at their Best 100 lists, which is where they throw all their resources behind these days.
Ands then there's the AFI director, upon deciding to shut down their repertory theater, saying that video made repertory programming unnecessary.

Not that I've seen many films this year (and not that many of this year's releases have inspired in me much desire to do so), but Solaris is the best film that I've seen this year. It's taking the beating, relatively speaking, for the critics sin of overhyping Traffic and Ocean's 11. Although it has gotten good reviews, it should be getting great reviews IMO.

Fair enough, though I see the Academy as way more guilty of this than AFI. Additionally, the rationale behind the holistic "best films" makes much more sense, IMO, than the various ill-conceived breakdowns for the Oscars. Talk about a pure promotional tool. Still, I wouldn't want to suggest any special place for this list alongside any others. Especially when we can just come on BigSoccer and ask Gringo Tex what the best films of the year are!
Btw, do you know of the guy from UT Austin on the AFI jury panel, Gringo?

I'm sure any list I would make would get slammed pretty hard, but as far as I'm concerned, an AFI list is on par with FIFA rankings.
I'm not a big movie watcher, so I can't really comment on the movie list. Also, the movies I watch are not the artsy movies that make most of these lists.
The only TV show on the list that I regularly watch is The Simpsons. I've watched for many years and this year has been somewhat of a letdown. I've seen The Sopranos, The West Wing, and Everybody Loves Raymond on occasion. While they are very good shows, I can't believe my favorite show didn't make the list. It combines very good acting and writing with a truly unique concept. In my opinion, 24 should have made this list.

Exactly. Useful only for "bar talk" and nothing more. The problem is, in America we can't get anyone in a bar to sit around and argue about Fifa rankings, so people come on here.

He was a prof of mine. He wrote the best book about the processes of the old Hollywood Studio system that I've ever read. It's called "Genius of the System."

Funny, I think I've seen a picture of Trey Anastasio once in my life, and for some reason he would have been my second off the wall guess.
