In response to Friday’s news at the sad passing of City fan and icon Helen Turner – we have been overwhelmed with messages and memories of Helen.

Her family have confirmed the funeral arrangements as follows:

Thursday, September 29 at 12.45pm at Rochdale Cemetery, Bury Road, Rochdale, OL11 4DG. The family have requested that supporters who wish to attend the funeral wear their City shirts.

There have been many calls for a minute’s silence, a minute’s applause and even a minute of ringing Helen’s bell ahead of the Everton game on Sunday morning. But at the moment the Club in conjunction with Helen’s family are discussing ways to celebrate her life prior to the players taking to the field on Sunday. But rest assured her bell will be heard again!

Club secretary Bernard Halford summed up the feeling within the Club saying: “Helen Turner was probably our most famous and well known supporter. She was known throughout the country as Helen with the bell.

“She will be sadly, sadly missed and as supporters go – she is a legend.

“The funniest story I can remember about Helen is during a cup tie away to Carlisle in the 70s, their fans were telling her to be quiet and stop ringing the bell, she turned to them and shouted, ‘If you wanted to be quiet, you should have gone to the pictures!’

“Helen was obsessed with her charity work and love of people, especially the kids, and will always be remembered as the ‘flower lady’ outside Manchester Royal Infirmary.”

We have picked out a selection of fan messages received at the Club (some from as far a field as Nigeria, Sweden and USA). And it has been confirmed there will be a permanent tribute to Helen in the memorial garden at the Stadium for those that would like to leave flowers.

Helen you will ALWAYS be one of my favourite memories of going to city with my dad when I was a kid and I know my wife helped you in your final few weeks as she was your carer, it was great to know that your bell was on your fireplace and your walls were covered in city memorabilia.
May you keep ring a ding dinging your bell in heaven rest in peace Helen you will be sadly missed by all at MCFC.

Yours, Dave Brimble

Helen was a great supporter of our City team, but she was also a fantastic supporter of Charity. She I am sure must have raised Thousands if not tens of Thousands for the Charity she was supporting. She could always be found sitting inside the entrance to the Manchester Royal Infirmary with her flowers and her collection tin.

Mr & Mrs Nelson and family.

My memory of Helen was the last game at Maine Road, it was just before the kick off and she was sat outside one of the turnstiles chanting "I'm not going, I'm not going!"
You could see she really meant it as Maine Road meant so much to her.

Once a Blue always a Blue is a true statement for Helen Turner.

Best wishes go to Helen’s family and friends (even though she used to wake us up on the coach from away games for a collection for the driver).
Her support was an inspiration to any fans.
Love
Chris

I now live in NY but am still a fanatical MCFC supporter. My earliest memories of City as a child are the bell that was always ringing near me when I sat in the North Stand.
Cheryl Dematas, New York.

THE RINGING OF THE BELL SOMEHOW ALWAYS LIFTED ME, AS ANY BLUE WOULD TELL YOU WATCHING CITY IS NOT ALWAYS WHAT IT SHOULD BE.
THE BELL RINGING HELPED WITH THE NERVES, THE HURT, THE HIGHS & LOWS.

LEROY

I remember my first game at Maine Road in 1968 I was four years old. I was with my Dad in the North Stand (before the seats) and we played QPR, with City winning 3-0.
There were sporadic bursts of Helen ringing her bell. From this point, as a child I made the connection that she was ringing a "bell" because she was Colin "Bell's" wife. I believed this for many years..........

My memories of her are of a lady who would always have the time before a game, especially at Maine Road, to speak to young kids.

An icon has gone now. Very sad.

Geoff Cowey.

I met Helen for the last time at the new stadium, she had been let out of hospital to see her beloved Blues and what did her beloved blues do, they lost of course.
A great character who will be missed by us all.

I remember going to the match with my Grandfather when I was about 4 or 5 years old and as much as remembering my first Manchester City match at Maine Road I remember a white haired lady who used to sit behind Joe Corrigan's goal in the old North Stand. I remember asking my Grandfather what the noise was and he said "that's Helen and her Bell" That brings back very fond memories of my visits to Maine Rd with my Grandfather.

Helen was one of the many special features that makes being a City fan the unique experience it is. We'll miss her.

Standing in the Kippax and singing for her to ring her bell from behind the goal will always be with me. She is part of the folklore of the club and will be sadly missed.

Helen's daughter, grandson, granddaughters and families would like to thank all the football fans who have sent words of condolences over the last 24 hours for our sad loss. Our lives are richer knowing that there are so many people who are sharing in our loss.

Thanks again to all supporters who have sent in the great many messages and memories of truly a City supporting legend…Helen Turner.
