It is interesting to note that zero Man U fans referred to Van Der Sar as one of the best goalkeepers in the Premiership when he was playing at Fulham for 4 years. I am guessing they believe that he has merely improved from the age of 34 onwards.

They didn't know who he was before Man Utd bought him...

I had questions remaining from his time at Juventus and it is always difficult to judge a keeper who is playing at a lesser side. The real test is how they perform for the elite clubs and whether they can adjust to not being called into action as regularly. Despite that he was clearly better than the options we currently had and he has more than proven himself since then.

Buffon doesn't.

Buffon is the best keeper in the World quite easily IMO.

Coming from two Juventus fans...

If they didn't know him, they are 12 year old or so.
Edwin was the follow up of Ed de Goey after the USA 1994 WC in the dutch NT, and the follow up of Stanley Menzo in 1993/1994.
After that he was always an important and decent player of the team where he played.
In my opinion he has always been the best goalie around since he played the first game at Ajax, but since 1 or 1,5 years I think he is getting slower, but his experience on the field is growing every game.

Casillas/Buffon the best line-keeper, Van Der Sar the best allround goalie.

Exactly. That is why I am trying to figure out why Buffon is so good. He literally always has a good defense in front of him. It helps his clean sheet numbers.

But when that good defense makes a mistake or an error, Buffon is always there to save the day and keep his team in the game.

I've watched Buffon's whole career, and there's only one time I've seen him make a blatant error (vs. Atalanta in Serie A a couple of years ago, let a backpass slip under his foot). He has excellent concentration and combined with his amazing physical ability and cat-like reflexes it allows him to always make any type of save, whether it be routine or jaw-dropping.

Yeah but you could easily say the same thing about Lehmann in the National Team. You of all people should know the Italian defense hardly makes mistakes. :p

Coming from two Juventus fans...:rolleyes:So we should pick someone else? Anyone who does not pick one of Buffon, Casillas, is a complete tool and doesn't deserve to have internet. It's that simple.

Thank god you're american.

It would have to be Iker Casillas after these last two seasons and the EURO 2008. He edged Buffon in two straight duels in Spain vs Italy with one of them even settled by the keepers themself.

I think the two are on the same leve with Casillas edging in front a bit.

1. Casillas
2. Buffon

3. Cech
4. Reina
4 [Anyone in good form]

Got no problem with Casillas ahead of Buffon.

I'll go with Trappatoni on this one :
1. Buffon
2. Shay Givens

Coming from a Newcastle fan, its gotta be Shay Given!

Also, young Tim Krul will be one of the best in a few years ;)
Still only 20!

lol. very true I was just referring to the defense in General. I think the Italians would prefer to just write off the Euros and look forward to WC.

Definately julio cesar. He has been the underated goalie of recent history. And his reflexes are second to none!
