He also did pretty good for Spain in Euro08.
He was the best keeper there :)

Rene Adler, watch for the name the kid will be huge. Manuel Neuer is another one. Handful of very young talented German keepers on their way. At the moment, Casillas is undoubtedly the best keeper. In a few years though, Adler will reign supreme.

If you cannot even judge the ability of the best current keeper then what makes you think you can do so for the new breed?

Buffon is overated by now, sure he had a few good seasons.....years ago.
Julio Cesar is highly underrated, he saved Inter many times last season, winning Man Of The Match many times. This season, its the same thing, Julio Cesar making huge saves, and Italians still thinking Buffon is the best.
But to be honest, I'd have to say Casillas is the best, anyone who denies it is just biased towards their club/country.
buffon gave up 30 goals in 34 games plus was very good for italy in qualifying and at euro 2008, all while playing with a herniated disk and until ranieri finally settled on legro and chiellini, he had a makeshift defense in front of him as well. if that doesn't qualify as a good season, then I don't know what would.
look I love both casillas and buffon, but buffon was very good last season as well and was very good at the euro too. anyone can choose one or the other, it's an opinion and I personally might even go with casillas right now, but I think some people probably didn't watch much of juve and are now talking out of their arse...:D.

Buffon and Cassilas are the best followed by Van der Sar. Julio Caesar is a joke. The man is another Dida in the making and is not worthy of being mentioned in the same breath as B and C. If you watch B and C, especially during Euro '08, it was simply amazing how they would intimidate forwards. These two gk gods are worth 10 to 15 points a season for their teams.
VDS best days are over but he was a great gk in his day.Cech has the potential but he makes a lot of mistakes especially over the past two seasons.

You haven't been watching Serie A for the last two seasons, have you?

I agree. I put Buffon first, Casillas 2nd, and Van der sar third. Howard is 29 and still improving... I he may become top 3 in a few more years.

So what's so great about Buffon?

I know this has been said earliar in this thread but half of why VDS looks so good is because he has Ferdinand and Vidic infront of him.

Exactly. That is why I am trying to figure out why Buffon is so good. He literally always has a good defense in front of him. It helps his clean sheet numbers.

Van Der Sar is def past his peak. He gets injured quite often these days.

Is that why we don't look so good with Kuszczak in goal?

For Italy you would be correct. For Juventus less so.

Despite that he is still one of the best around which says it all.

he was good at fulham also
and the defense of the dutch national team has never been, how you say it 'solid'.

That's very true, I'm not saying VDS is terrible and the only reason why he's being talked about in this thread is because of his defenders. I said half of why VDS looks good is because of Ferdinand and Vidic.

I disagree. Just look at Cech's recent mistakes behind the Chelsea defense and midfield. Look at some of the erratic things Reina does behind the Liverpool defense and midfield. Having good players in front of you helps but at the level of keeper we are talking about it does not matter nearly as much as you think.

That's fine, he is good on his line. I think though in the air he leaves a lot to be desired. He comes up with some fantastic saves on the line, when it comes to plucking a cross from the air he isn't necessarily top notch. That is where ManU's defense help him a lot.

I'm sure there have been situations where a team has an excellent D and a great goalie but the goalie still makes mistakes and vice versa where a good goalie has a mediocre D but still consistently plays good. I merely said Ferdinand and Vidic help VDS look better, I'm not taking anything away from him.

Buffon is the best keeper in the World quite easily IMO.
