Gomes, Reina, Julio Cesar and Rogerio Ceni are also goalkeepers with great control and distribution skills.

No you don't. How is a goalie that can throw equal to or comparable to a outfield player? One thing has nothing to do with the other. Most goalies are more then capable of receiving a pass without making a mess out of it. And even though you have seen Van Der Saar get an assists from some fluke situation doesn't mean he is like an 11th outfield player. That's dumb and you know it.
Most keepers will do nothing in terms of accurate distribution. If you have one that does, and can create attacking opportunities either directly or indirectly, then you have effectively gained another outfield player. i.e. a player capable of influencing the player outside of the box. Would you rather I phrased it differently? The fact remains that having a keeper capable of doing so is a big advantage and it clearly does provide the team with an extra dimension.

Laughable. Slot Van der Sar in and your 5 would be pretty good.
vds, are u serious? hes just solid, ur man utd bias is terrible teso, maybe van der sarr about 15 years ago
cech is a much better keeper than vds
anyway, buffon has to be top of the list, followed by casillas
tim howard does not deserve to be in the top 10 let alone 5....lol at saying this list is euro snobbery cus it doesnt contain americans

VDS has been a crucial component of the side and one of the reasons why our defense has been so good over recent years. He's also been great for Holland. Cech has fallen since his injury issues. Far too many stupid mistakes for club and country.

EDIT: I also like how you accuse me of bias but conveniently ignore the countless other posters who have included him. Hmm...

Not right now. Though I do believe it is just a patch of form.

Man Utd is an elite side with some of the best players in the world. Stating as much does not make me biased. I'm not the one going around claiming Clichy to be the best left-back in the league or Ashley Cole to not even be in the 10 best. That is your fan base and that is bias. Get your own house in order before throwing insults elsewhere.

i never said cole wasnt a top ten????
i said i rate clichy highly, he and cole are both excellent fullbacks
i rate clichy higher than evra, u only beef that decision cus evra plays for utd!!
i dont care if other arsenal fans differ in opinion as its the arsenal board, we get annoyed with u because even though we respect your knowledge in some ways we all feel you talk down our players and overhype utds....which is fine, on the utd board

As I said previously, deal with the bias in your own fan base before whining about anyone else. Little things like performances and achievements seem to agree with my rating of our respective players. Are those biased as well? :D

Gettin counters by throwing is something Buffon does atleast as well.
If by 'accurate distribution' you mean actually making a successful pass to your closest defender, which is what Van Der Saar and everyone does, then fine. If a goalie can't do that then he shouldn't be playing football.

VDS is pure class. He's an outstanding keeper that plays for a world class club and a top top national team (prior to retiring at least). I have no manure bias whatsoever, that's just my opinion on him.
Cech is pish lately. That *may* be a rough patch, but it's a little silly to me to tout a keeper as being "top5"/"top10"/whatever on the belief that he'll pull through it.
One name I am curious about and haven't seen mentioned is Boruc. He was pretty ridiculous at Euros and World Cup -- and from what I've heard he replicates that in CL (confirm/deny??). Unfortunately Polands' defense is terribad so he'll never get far in those competitions, and he doesn't play at a top club so I wouldn't have him in a top5, maybe a top10 at best. But I'm curious what other people think of him?

More often than you think and more often than Buffon does for starters. By accurate distribution I mean to any player on the park, not merely a simple Italian style roll of the ball along the ground to a central defender standing two feet away.

He is a good shot stopper but makes far too many stupid mistakes to merit a place in the top 10. He is mentally weak and often a liability.

Buffon no doubts about it.

Peter Cech hands down. Just because he plays for a hated club doesn't mean the man losses talent. Buffon had a tremendous World Cup and is now cooling off. Get with the program!
