As a Tottenham fan I'm pretty much a neutral & I think Buffon is the better 'keeper.
There will come a time when Buffon begins to decline through age & Casillas surpasses him I suspect.
I look forward to watching them head to head in the CL games.
I agree on all of it. I think Casillas has the potential for greatness, I just think true greatness takes longer to achieve than some here seem to think. They are both a joy to watch for those who appreciate great goalkeeping.

1.Buffon
2.Casillas
3.Tim Howard
4.Sebastian Frey
5.Julio Cesar
the fact people question Buffon as #1 have not seen him play enough, he has owned the spot for a few years now and I dont see him losing it in the forseeable future. Cech should no longer even be in the discussion

Laughable. Slot Van der Sar in and your 5 would be pretty good.

laugh it up everyone, but in reality Tim Howard is an amazing goalie. Maybe he should have been 5th on my list but I was a bit irritated over some of the Buffon haters.

I might put Van der sar slightly ahead of frey, his performances last year were very underrated for club and country. The most underrated keeper is Freidel, he wouldnt make a top 5 list but he deserves a lot more credit than he gets.

van der sar the best
casillas and buffon are very good also, but can they football with the team, no
that is something that we dutch want from a keeper, not only stop balls, but he is the 11th field player also. so that is why I think vd Sar is the best goalie.

That's like saying Rooney is a better striker then Van Basten was because Rooney can tackle. Completely irrelevant.

In Holland it is. The keepers get trained in playing along when they are young, if you watch a dutch team you see that they are playing the ball back to the keeper very often, because the building of the attack starts with the keeper, and if the opponent has 10 field players and you have 11, than you always have a free man.
In Italy the only thing a keeper has to do is catch the ball from the line, because of that you like buffon more, because buffon is the better line-keeper as we call it.

The kind of passes Van Der Saar get's from his teammates aren't any harder to deal with then what Buffon get's. And they deal with them pretty much exactly the same way, they pass to a defender or kick it long.

If you have a keeper who is comfortable on the ball and is good at distribution (both from throwing and kicking) then you effectively gain an extra outfield player. I've seen Van der Sar spark an attack from a long throw to an open man halfway up the pitch and also put Rooney clean through on the keeper from a kick before. It gives the team an extra dimension. Add that to the rest of his game and you have a very good keeper.

How is a goalie that can throw equal to or comparable to a outfield player? One thing has nothing to do with the other. Most goalies are more then capable of receiving a pass without making a mess out of it. And even though you have seen Van Der Saar get an assists from some fluke situation doesn't mean he is like an 11th outfield player. That's dumb and you know it.
