They'll invite the MLS Cup Champion again next year. Hopefully that'll be DC United again.

I'm a lot more focused on the rest of this year. Hopefully the team and coaches are too.

I wonder if the runner up gets a shot, even if they have to go in as an earlier round.

United might have lost in the first round that they played in, but I think that DC represented the league well and earned some respect.

Yes but Mike I don't think that us as fans, on an internet message board, are going to hurt United's playoff attempt for this year by talking about things that could happen next season.

As am I, I just wanted to know the feeling of other people if were be invited back seperatly or the MLS champ will be invited. I dont see any other team doing well down there, as were the most constistintly(i cant spell) good club in international matches

I hope they will invite the MLS champ. But, I thought this was based on the Concacaf Champions Cup results - the Copa Sud took the two Mexican teams in the semis as well as us, but didn't get the champions.

I think we made a good case to get an invite again, we played attractive soccer and played what I felt (and announcers felt also) the most entertaining/dramatic game of the Copa so far last night. I'm sure the tournament officials will look our way again, despite this loss these types of games are only good for our team and MLS.

Club America weren't in CONCACAF Champions Cup, Monterrey was the other Mexican team in that.

The idea was that the runner up of CONCACAF CC would get the invite to Sudamericana, hence Pumas. We were lucky to get an invite anyway.

Copa SUdamericana, is bankrolled by the Nissan ppl. That said, the north american soccer TV money is truely in Mexico, US, not really (not yet anyways). But what they should do is have a small playoff between (home and away) for 8 MLS teams and 8 LMF teams.

a) would save travel costs / travel fatigue
b) build good rivalries between MLS & LMF teams
c) defintely pack the stadiums (though sadly maybe in the same way USNT does)
d) this year 3 (MEX) & 1 (USA), so we'd still keep that number.
e) maybe bump US club soccer TV ratings
f) give Chivas USA, a reason to (possibly aim for, finishing 8th overall):p

Yeah that would be cool, but def not enough money to be had. other than the harcore fans, noone would come. Just look at the attendances for the concacaf cup. Nothing to b extremely happy about. We need to draw more first in other comps. before we create somehting like that. Not bad though

What did DC United get out of Copa SudAmerica? A share of the gate, TV money, or just a chance to win the respect of the world? If anyone knows please post.

I thought the two finalists from CONCACAF CC were to go (the other Mexican teams got in some other way). So, Pumas and Saprissa were invited, but Saprissa declined due to other committments. DC was a substitute invite for Saprissa.

Based on this, we need to focus on winning CONCACAF CC first in the Spring (or at least get to the finals), to get back our standing in Copa SudAmerica.

But to get to CONCACAF CC, we need to get to MLS Cup Finals. Right? Or is it Cup winner and Shield winner? Anyway, we need to keep winning hardware to get back.

GO GO GO UNITED!

Well provided MLS chooses to do it the same way as last year then, yes, we have to make it to the MLS Cup finals to get back into CCC.

That raises the question: does MLS want to send their best "international" club teams to these tournaments? or do they want to set up consistent rules so that teams know what they must do to advance to other competitions?

[crickets]

[no answer forthcoming from MLS]

IMO, DC, KC, and LA are the only teams with the players/coach combination that might be successful in international play. MLS is more interested in annointing teams that might be successful outside league play, rather than seeing the league champ get crushed due to lack of international experience. Hopefully, in five years (10?) this annoiting process could change. As much as I enjoy DC going, it would strange to be selected without the proper winning credentials in league play.

I don't think those are the only two.

I would fancy San Jose's chances, especially with a healthy Brian Ching. They play solid attacking soccer and you would have to think they would be at a huge advantage at Spartan Stadium where a forgein team would have no experiece with the tight confines of the field.

I agree, San Jose and NE would be the next tier that might pull an upset, but might get crushed too. I think not of their strong points, but of the starting 11's weak points that might get exposed. From the games I've seen, I think San Jose's midfield doesn't possess well enough under pressure (maybe I haven't seen enough of their games). For NE, I think their scoring tandem doesn't hold up internationally, maybe because Twellman is great at losing his mark in MLS and is punishing on his finish, but I don't think that is as easily done elsewhere.

My point exactly. DCU vs. Pumas brought in 21k on a Wed night. That said, imagine what teams closer to Mexico would bring in. Esp. if international spots are on the line, not just another friendly. For example the top 4 teams in each MLS confrence are:
EAST
1.Revs
2.DCU
3.Fire
4.KCW
WEST
1.Quakes
2.Dallas
3.Galaxy
4.Colorado

While the Eastern teams might not get the big boost in att. the teams in the west would get a 3-4 K bump. That said, these games are needed to A) Rise up hype for MLS teams B) Improve and make it the point where the quality of MLS teams keeps improving' even with the K-mart budgets each one has.
