I was full of pi$$ and vinager for the majority of this season. After winning MLS cup 2004, and the comeback of Moreno, AND the jewels that boswell and gomez turned out to be, I believed that we would do well in the 4 seperate tournaments we participated in. No, i didn't believe that United would win every cup they played in, but i've gone round with a few posters who claim the DC is a .500 club at best. I strongly disagreed. With the door slamming shut on yet another cup, I need to re-asses the tint of my glasses and figure out if i am nothing but a kool-aid drinking homer.
It's not just the losing that bothers me, it's the way we got dumped in the USOC and this recent heartbreak. I think that that the SA cup would have been the hardest to bring home, due to who we would have had to face IF we could have gotten by last night. I still, even after the mexico city massacre belive that the CCC was a winnable tourny, and that not only was the USOC "winnable", I think we should not have just won it, but run away w/ the damm thing.
I know that everybody's bummed about last night, but we had more chances to win hardware this year than any other MLS club, and at times we do look like the class of the league. The point is this, am i mutating from a pollyanna to a chicken little doom proclaimer if I feel that now, at this point in the season, anything else that a 5th MLS cup would make the season a complete and utter failure?

I think everyone posting on this Board after the Catolica match should get drunk and perform the horizontal mambo this weekend. Waaayyyy too much pent up energy. :D

I think it's too early to start navel-gazing. Last night's loss hurt, but we fought very hard and lost a heartbreaker.
Personally, I think it's cocky beyond belief to expect to win championships. If that's how you judge success, you're doomed to regular disappointment in the long run. By any measure, DCU has delivered WAY above expectations in the past 10 years.
Enjoy the wins, and enjoy the growth we're seeing in our team.

what?
yes, expecting to win every game is cocky, expecting to win every tourny your in is cocky. But we should expect a good showing. And smart palying. We didn't partake in these other cups because we were bored, we were, are and will be out to win compettions we participate in. I get the point of "you can't win 'em all" and youre right, you cant. But at pumas, against dallas, and last night were poor ways to go out. that bothers me.

That's why I don't have expectations.
Except them to play hard and me to tear my throat win or lose.

My expectation for the rest of the season is that these guys put 110% into each game and win, lose or draw I'll be proud of this team. They've played extremely well so far this year, with the few bad losses we have had, we've seen some excellent soccer both at home and away.
Small recap:
Think back to the 4-3 victory vs Chicago where it looked like they were going to come in and kick our tails. Freddy scoring in the last moments of the game against LA in HDC to bring home a 1-0 victory. Boswell with that slamdunk of a goal against Chelsea. Our 3-0 victory over Chivas at home. 2-1 over Dallas at their new Pizza Box.
This is a group of guys who kept their focus after winning the Cup last year, and have played some entertaining soccer this season.
I for one am not crying yet, yeah last night and the USOC bounce by Dallas was tough, but we're not the best team in this league for nothing.
VAMOS UNITED!

You don't think we had a good showing last night? Seriously? You think we didn't go out to win all those matches?
As an aside, do you see 'Vodafone', 'Fly Emirates' on our jersey someplace?
We improve in small steps. We're still a very young team, and pretty naive. The mistakes we made in the matches you mention can be attributed to youth, inexperience, and fatigue. 'Smart playing' as you call it, comes with experience. Yesterday was a big step in our development.

No, the USOC was a learning experiance, and it was a lesson we didn't learn very well. How long can we blame mistakes on youth , and inexperiance? The coach, moreno, ben, tino, walker, dema, etc have experiance. (national team, playing overseas, MLS cups, CCC games.)
and not at all did we show well last night, we knocked in one, one goal, and caught a lucky break with a richochet. We were handed the win. And again if the other team spots you 2, and you give it up like a cheap prom date, it dosen't matter that you hustled. It matters that we lost. We didn't get invited to this cup because we played with heart during the MLS cup. We got the invite because we won.
And no, i have no delusions of DC being on the same level as Milan, or Chelsea in the immediate furute, but i sure as ******** don't like my team, our team, a team WITH talent, and team that SHOULD win close competetions, become the loveable losers. No, that line of thinking i'll leave for crew fans. Our boys win, thats why we're the best.

We can do that while we have young, inexperienced players on the field. Experience does not mean a handful of games.

If you can say that last night's match casts us in the role of 'lovable losers', I don't need to comment any further. You started the thread with a title of 'Expectations'. Yours are unrealistically high. IMO, of course.

youre right, to a point. Nobody "made" me expect that DC United would win something this year, and i don't mean beating RSL or winning the atlantic cup. I'm not one of these "It's about the journey" guys.
and i didn't mean that you were akin to a crew fan in anyway. Or that you don't want us to win.
Part of it is yes, last nights loss stings. But we've done the same thing in other cup games this year, and i hope to God we stop giving away important games.

Oh, don't worry, i don't take stuff personally.
And, for the record, I am very much a "It's about the journey" guy. The winning is nice, and it gives us great ammunition to crow about, but I can honestly say I have found things to enjoy in every season, even the bad ones that I've tried to hard to forget.
I'm talking about stuff like seeing young players gain in confidence and skill over a season, the occasional golazo, the privilege of watching Marco, Jaime, et al. I care about this team as I have cared for no other, including the Redskins, and I've been a Redskins fan for 35 years.

after a day of brooding, (and again not doing squat at the office) it occured to me that i really hated Yankee fans, Bulls fans in the 90's, lakers fans, the people that just liked the team for winning, band-wagoners. United hadn't won anyhting for a while when i started watching their games. Seems like a petulant brat to go on about MY expectations. and calling the season a disaster for not bringing home trophies.
oh, look at that, it's almost beer:30.
