View Full Version : Which country will fail to meet their fans expectations?

I am not adding poll here, because it is hard to clarify what does it mean "performance below expectations". For Brazilians this is probably when their team takes 2nd or 3rd place in World Cup, for English fans it can be if they'll finish in last 8 even if they haven't reached anything better since 1990. But generally everyone feels that some nation can fail to meet expectations, just as France and Argentina did in 2002, or Spain, France again and Germany during Euro 2004. This is just an example of scenarios which can happen:
Brazil fails to reach semifinals, losing to some strong European nation in quarterfinal
Sweden and Czech Republic expected to be dark horses fail to qualify from the group.
Argentina finishes in last 16.
USA and Mexico are shown that it is not enough to win everything on their continent to be big football nation.
Germany reaches last 16 and then loses to Serbia, what shows that host nation is still in crisis.
No Asian or African nation goes to second round.
And so on and so on. What can happen in your opinion?

so, my own fear first:) poland loses two opening games and is out of competition before the third one... we win it but it cant change anything, just like in 2002.

If Argentina doesn't make the finals it'll be a supreme disappointment for the country.

Brazil.
Everyone... at least the not-so-well educated popular bunch of football fans are really overrating them for the coming finals.

If La Republica doesnt do well and get at least to the semi's.....i will be extremely disapointed...maybe not as much as what happened in the mother land during EURO 2004....god damn that was disapointing...

ok, everyone says that he will be dissapointed if his nation fail to meet his expectations, it's clear.
but tell me, do you have feeling like, for example, "germany will fail to reach what is expected from host nation" or "brazil won't win in europe" (if you are not brazilian)?
i have a feeling that non-european teams will have poor tournament, and only brazil and argentina can reach anything, what can be dissapointment for fans from usa or mexico who have lot of expectations (as we can read on bigsoccer.com regulary)

This is a naive stance.
Home teams often do well. Consider Korea's near dance to the finals last time around, and they're nowhere near as profilic or good as Germany is.

they will go as far as ballack can drag them... no jk, but even though germany went all the way to finals 4 years ago, i think their lack of forward/MFs and there lack of playing in european qualifying will have a grave effect on them in 06. who knows though??
italy will meet the expectations. england will not. portugal will meet the expectations. usa will not. netherlands and brazil in final!!

Well Ronaldo have very high expectation for Portugal...He said he wishes to go to the finals and face Brasil
Portugal Vs. Brasil World Cup Final....Sounds good to me(nike would promote the hell out of it)
P.S: Portugal will not lose the America if we are to face them again... We have Ronaldo now....and our Midfeild is stronger....

so what we have freddy adu! onyewu would handle pauleta very nicely, in my opinion. also, of note....c ronaldo is on manchester united and they have been in some tight games and he has not come through. 0-0 to villarreal, 0-0 to liverpool. so you see, juss cuz u hav that one player doesnt mean you guys are gonna beat us.
either way good game though

those games were played when his father just died..i dont know about you, but i woudnt play well if my father just psassed away
ur also forgetting joao moutinho, the 18 year old who has the top teams in europe after him..some say hes the pirlo of portugal..then we have quaresma whose absolutly on fire right now, seems a whole new player ...i really can go on..but its good that many of u think portugal sucks, we play better being underdogs( euro 2000)
