Pelé - Erm...
Ayrton Senna - Since Auto is our 2nd passion,Senna without doubt has more respect than some football players here. And he died like a martyr,so...
Lula - Hm...I don't like him,but,I have to say...he was part of a crucial moviment at 80's.
Getúlio Vargas - The other side, actually when someone talks about "progress",Getúlio is the name.I don't know, some guys hate him, some guys love him...
...Tião Macalé - NOJENTO,TCHAN!:D

Yeah,Pelé and Senna need no explanation:)
I would like to add "os Mutantes",they really are an influence for many bands in Brazil and even outside our country.Very well respected musicians. This apply to Tom Jobim as well:)

Being so immersed in Brasilian culture these days, what with a live-in Carioca at home, its difficult for me to see clearly who in today's era is truely an icon internationally (as opposed to just well known).
Growing up and prior to ever having visited Brasil, the top three were IMO:
1. Pele - undisputed. Santos' and the Selecao's sucess and travels throughout the world in the 60s exposed Brasilian football, and Brasil in general, to people in a manner that no PR campaign could have hoped to accomplish. Pele's footballing talent and demeanor naturally made him the living icon. Growing up in the seventies on three different continents, I went to mosty expat schools that resembled the UN, and no matter the part of the world kids came from they all knew of him. I remember in junior high our professor putting up a poster with a collage of some 150 world personalities (pope, heads of state, entertainers, etc), the most recognized names were Pele's and Ali's, followed by the Pope. And, the vast majority of the boys that recognized him wanted to some day visit Brasil.
Living in Brasil most of your life you may not get this sense. My girlfriend found this out within a few months of moving here. Still learning the language, when she communicated she was Brasilian to someone, the first two words back from that person (since her English comprehension limited their abilities to communicate more deeply) were "Pele" or "Carnaval." This came as a big surprise to her. What the man has done through football for the image of Brasil is immeasurable.
2. Mulatta - think of the Carnaval reference above. I know that this is not a specific person, but IMV deserves mention. This image is decidedly double-sided, both positive and negative. Positive because it highlights the beauty of the brasilian woman of colour, and the cultural impact of Samba and Carnaval. Its negative because in many ways it also marginalizes her role to that of a sexual icon, or worse a sexual object, without a deeper understanding of her place within the culture and deep impact on the society.
3. Antonio Carlos Jobim - when the movie "Black Orpheus," which he scored, was released in 1958 it had major impact across the world and made Bossa Nova a global phenomenon. Add that with "Girl From Ipanema" and Jobim was on the mantle place of almost every person my parents knew, and found in the homes of all music lovers no matter where in the world I travelled. Thanks to him when you thought of Brasil you associated it with "cool."

I certainlyl agree with Jobim. But Black Orpheus was also very large because of Luis Bonfa and Bossa Nova's explosion was also aided by the poet, who is iMO one of the most influential Brazilian artists of all time, Vinicius De Moraes. Along with Baden Powell, Joao Gilberto and Gilberto Gil, Brazilian culture through music, through social issues was provided through music and art. So many artists helped to shape a movement, I think these artists were in the forefront... with of course Stan Getz helping to spread it. (Useless information... Joao Gilberto was married to Astrud Gilberto, but Astrud and Stan Getz had an affair. Bebel Gilberto, who is very popular today, is the daughter of Joao Gilberto and Bossa Nova singer Miucha, who is the sister... I believe... of Chico Buarque.)
Antonio Carlos Jobim though is easily one of the greatest composers that ever lived. I'm also a huge fan of the works by Moacir Santos (Nana among others).

To me Roberto Carlos is the other brazilian REI!the most talented musician i have ever heard or seen in my life. my 1st roberto carlos song i ever heard was Amada amante! i was a little kid in africa(Cameroon} it brought me to tears! up till today my older brother cries when he listen to his songs! he wrote most of his song with his partner called erasmo carlos! i will say that i have every single song he ever wrote or performed. there is no better romantic singer in the world before Roberto Carlos or after him. i grew up in the USA were we have greats like Marvin Gaye, Barry White Luther vandross and also there is Julio Iglesias none compared to roberto carlos! since in the mid sixties when he burst in to the scene as a rock musician and transformed himself to the best romantic singer ever, he has produce beautiful songs like: O show ja terminuo, os botoes da blusa, alem do horizonte ,gatto nel bue{in italian} amigo, mulhere de quarenta{the most beautiful and sweetest song ever} jesus cristo{very religious too} and the grandest of them all: "amada amante"! these are just a few of the thousands of amazing songs this man has! he is trully a musical genius as pele is a soccer genius which brings me to a show i watched at O'Globo at the home of meus amigos brasileiros. this show was called Dois REIS! it was in the 70s and it had Roberto Carlos and Pele playing Guitar and singing great songs in the middle of a soccer field! wat a show! iTs amazing how good pele is at playing the guitar and singing! i will say he held his own againt the most gifted singer ever in my opinion! go check out roberto carlos's music and when you do my friend you will discover heaven like he said in his song alem do horizonte deve ter alguma lugar pra vive em paz! and that means heaven1

Roberto Carlos the most talented musician ever? Cmon, you must have a limited Record collection! Yes he is Iconic, but not nearly the greatest talent ever. Caetano Veloso is just 1 example of someone that outscore RC by 5 x 0.
Roberto Carlos was a Beatle wanna be in the 60's and then became a Romantic Singer in the 70s and for the rest of his carreer. He hasnt done ANYTHING creative in 40 years.
Some other Iconic Brazilians (not necessarily talented):
Xuxa - Billionaire ex model that was driven into the spotlight when she dated Pele in the 80s. Then she made her own TV carreer and is now one of the richest woman in Brazil.
Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Chico Buarque, Milton Nascimento, cazuza, Renato Russo: All Musicians that have become legendary.
Tancredo Neves: The President that never was. Died before taking office during one of Brazils most optimistic moments in 1985.
Silvio Santos: Legendary TV Show host, still on the air.
O Chacrinha: Another TV host, past away.
Os Trapalhoes: Brazil's 3 stooges.
Garrincha
Pele of course
Santos Dumont which Brazilians claim is the father of aviation.
and of course Soccerscout.

well i judge roberto carlos from his romantic musical days and not the beatles wannabe days. most of the singers you name are bossa nova or jazz or sambalistas! but when it comes to romantic songs nobody beats roberto carlos! he has no equal and yeah he is iconic! very! just think about "amada amante" one of the, if not the most popular love songs in the world ever!!!and that is only one of his many hits! anywhere in this world that i travel people know of Roberto Carlos. he sings in spanish, portuguese of course, italian and he also have som e french songs and also english songs! you see he is not just a brazilian icon he is a world icon! hows that!!!!!!
