Using crude Babelfish, this article pretty much "confirms" that SJ will move to Houston under the name "America-USA."

It says "There is already a CF America-USA. The team will play in the professional league of the United States (MLS) the next season in Houston, Texas, in place of the San Jose Earthquakes...(something about negotiating the right compared to the managerial board of CF America in brief).

The president of the team will be Javier Pérez Teuffer, manager of las Aguilas (CA) in Mexico, and the coach will be Antonio Carlos Santos."

[now translating rest]

"The first reenforcement/signing will be/is the Chilean midfielder Fabián Estay, although some other players of the current Aztec football champions, particularly of foreign origin.

América-USA will play 2006 in MLS and will have as its prinicpal opponent its bitter rival, Chivas-USA.

....this project was cooking for more than a year, but for different circumstances, (CA could not make the deal).

The constant visits of CA president Guillermo Cañedo to North American territory were to consider different sites and those with the best possibility of creating growing/spreading (CA spirit).

With the reality of the North American Aguilas (CA) it continue the process of expansion of the growing club for the whole world, and especially on the American continent."

Good work cobbles. Ok, is this a credible newspaper? I just need to know. This is some heavy material they've got. Jesus christ, America-USA, are they idiots? Do they want the occasional punchline on Sportscenter or something?

I think this thing needs to go on N&A.

This is a national sports newspaper. It is not the biggest and most respected, but it is among the top ones. However, we have seen false reports from some Mexican sources before. This one has my attention because it has so many specifics. BTW I have already PMd Goodsport, the SJ mod so he knows about this rather than starting a duplicate thread.

As much as I would love the Quakes to pull a Columbus in the playoffs, I think it'll be an MLS tragedy if San Jose is moved. If only because of the proposed new stupid name. I'm guessing SSV will post something soon. Funny that this comes up right before the quakes take on Chivas USA.

I asked Various Styles, emminent Mexico mod :) for his comment.

Ovaciones is a reliable news paper, however they have been known to jump the gun. Like most things America related, owned by Televisa, those things are not considered a done deal until one of Televisas outlets gives the news. Still, Ovaciones wont report unless they are on to something..

Ovaciones is a legit and national newspaper with a history that is at least, IIRC, 50 years old. The newspaper is credible. But. As with any newspaper, it depends who is writing the particular column and what are their sources. Remember those infamous US journalists who have written fake stories in very, very respectful mags.?

If you read article, no sources. And really. If you read it closely, there is really not that much that is different than what has appeared in BigSoccer postings and US articles. I did quick search on other mexican national newspapers and Club America's web page and there is no confirmation on what the article reports. So. We shall see.

Forget it, go to the what a hell thread, there's a good discussion going on there.

I just wanna add that the source is legit, Ovaciones is owned by Televisa and the rumors about America buying the Quakes have been around for more than I can remember, now they are confirmed.

...and the smack talk has started already over at the Mexico forum:

I think they are trying to find ways to not talk about "El Guille" Franco in el Tri. :D

Televisa's annual report from 2000 says it sold its share of Ovaciones for $25 million. Maybe they bought it back.

While I'm sure that Televisa is actively pursuing an MLS expansion or relocation team, this report just doesn't seem right. No way they go with the name America-USA....besides being moronic and repetitive, its looks like a complete rip-off of Chivas-USA, which is something they probably woudn't do.

If it turns out to be true there better already be a SSS plan ready to go..
It would seem rather cruel to move San Jose because they can't get a stadium plan together then move to a city with owners with no stadium plan in place either.. :o

No way they go with the name Real Salt Lake....besides being moronic, there is no Spanish history in Utah or Salt Lake City, no formal relationship with Real Madrid etc etc. etc

FYP - circa last year. . .

They just might.. Sometimes things get lost in "cultural translation"...
On the Tonight Show, Jay Leno showed some candy from China meant for the American market called "Farts"..
Some Mexicans can't understand why some Americans get a chuckle out of seeing Bimbo as a sponsor on the front of a soccer jersey.. ;)
