I certainly don't want to offend the Hanover fans here, but the comparison with Bath is just not appropriate. I'm sure every host city has to offer a lot, but the capital of Lower Saxony is not particularly famous for its beauty.
Neither is the Ruhr Area, although some of the best stadia can be found there.

Cologne ............... Liverpool

I don't know Liverpool, but it must be a nice, appealing city then.
Cologne's one of Germany's oldest cities, with a lot of old architecture and dozens of beautiful churches, the famous cathedral exceeding it all. The Rhineland is generally very nice. Friendly, cheerful people there.

I think Cologne is a great city but it's definitly not beautiful imo, except for the fantastic dome.

Because of the war most of the city was destroyed during the war and cheap concrete buildings now are the most common sight in the city.

My insider tip for those who are going to attend matches in the west of Germany and who like to do a lot of sightseeing: Trier, a medium scale city (100000 inhabitants) at the river Mosel (renowned german wine region).

http://redaktion.trier.de/praefectus/trier?tourist_en

It’s the oldest city we’ve got, packed with roman remains. Nowhere north of the Alps you’ll find so many historical buildings from that period. Nice medieval market too.

Distances from World Cup venues (time it takes to get there by train):
115 kilometres away from Kaiserslautern (2 hours)
186 km from Frankfurt am Main (3 hours)
187 km from Cologne (2,5 hours)

If anyone is interested (probably after you all know where your teams are going to play), I can give you further information.

The university I work at has an arrangement w/ the University of Trier. Lot of our students study there and vice versa. Same with professors as well.

Ruhr Valley plus there are some smaller regions like "Pfalz" (region around Kaiserslautern).

OMG, where did you get that ideas?

Cologne ............... Liverpool ???

Liverpool, as the whole North-west industiral region, compares perfectly to the Ruhr Valley. Though somewhat smaller.

Dortmund ............. Middlesbrough ???

Dortmund has about 600.000, the English city what? 150.00? Dortmund and Leeds would fit as both have an industrial background and have a city partnership. Also seize-wise that could work out.

Frankfurt ............. Manchester ?????????

The Banking metropol of Europe and second largest airport in Europe compared with Manchester? Come on.

Hamburg............... Newcastle ??????????????????????

Hamburg's blink-blink world compared to the North-east industiral city? As many people compare Schlacke and NUFC, Gelsenkirchen and Newcastle would fit perfectly.

Hanover................ Bath ?????????????????????????????????????

This must be a mere joke. Comparing Bad Godesberg with Bath would suit better.

Munich ................ Edinburgh ????

No comment. Ever been to Munich and Edinburgh?

Yeah, I guess Schalke v Dortmund is a big rivalry in Germany then....?

It's the biggest rivalry in the 1. Bundesliga, but a lot of other derbies involving lower league teams are much more fierce. (The Berlin derby (BFC vs Union), Frankfurt-Kickers Offenbach, etc.)

When was the last time you have been here? I have no idea how Bath looks, but Hanover, having been terrible untill the mid-90ies, has gained a lot in the last 10 years.
