This thread might suffer from the fact that non-German speakers won't understand the title.

Anyway, could anyone familiar with Germany and the UK give a sort of comparison of some of the cities?

Sorry, that sounded quite negative.

Thanks for all the responses so far, very useful and informative.

You are right, I'll change that for the result thread where I put everything ordered.

Don't think that's possible, they should not compare that well. Germany has a far more federative history and therefore the cities developed very differently compared to Britain (centerd at London) or France (at Paris). In general though:
working class cities are those in the far east like Gelsenkirchen (schalke) and Dortmund. Berlin is a real capital with the most international flair of the WC host cities, but that is also true to a lesser degree to Munich, Cologne, Hamburg, and Frankfurt. Stuttgart, Hanover, Leipzig and Nuremberg are somewhat between those.
From what I know of England (I have only been to London and Torquay) the Ruhr cities compare to those northern English working towns (Manchester?), London is more international though than berlin, Berlin could be better compared to Amsterdam, Rome, Barcelona, Kopenhagen, Oslo or Stockholm.

Dresden is also worth a visit, even though not a world cup site. It has one of the most beautyfull historic old towns in Germany and can compete with Italian cities for beauty.

Leverkusen is a suburb of Cologne, btw.

Especially for comme, here's my stab at a comparison between the 12 venues and the cities most like them in the UK:

Berlin ................. London
Cologne ............... Liverpool
Dortmund ............. Middlesbrough
Frankfurt ............. Manchester
Gelsenkirchen ....... Coventry
Hamburg............... Newcastle
Hanover................ Bath
Kaiserslautern....... Aldershot
Leipzig................. Southampton
Munich ................ Edinburgh
Nuremberg ........... Cardiff
Stuttgart ............. Bristol

Just my gut feelings ... I'm sure plenty of people will disagree!

Places to avoid then ;)

Thanks for that. I get the feeling that the Ruhr is quite alot like the N East of England, but much more densely populated.

I have been thinking about Erfurt or Jena as a possible base, as they are so centrally located, but know that if you did that in England you'd end up in Wolverhampton, Derby or Coventry (all hell holes for those Germans that have never had the pleasure).

"Places to avoid then"

You may say that - I, of course, couldn't possibly comment!

Erfurt is a lovely old town, but boring as scheisse. I've never been to Jena, but the three people I've met from there have been extraordinarily stupid. Not a scientific sample, mind you, but enough to get me wondering.

The city comparisons are fun, and as we all acknowledge impossible, but I think Blagdon Red's attempt was pretty decent. I'd be tempted to say Frankfurt is more like Birmingham and Cologne like Manchester, but again only a feeling.

I'm staying in Werl, just east of Dortmund. Anybody been there?

Stayed in Hannover during the Confederations Cup. the Gilde Ratskeller went down remarkably well.

Hanover................ Bath

Isn't bath supposed to be one of England's most beautiful cities? If so, the comparison certainly fits :D even though about 400.000 people more live in Hannover than in Bath.

Too easy...

And I'm currently in a very peaceful mood anyway :D.

Yep, Bath is a beautiful Georgian city with some of the best architecture in Britain. It is a bit expensive and touristy, but very nice.

You might as well write it. (Something to do with 'biggest village' of Germany?) ;)

I have no idea what I thought of back then actually. And of course I can't think of anything witty at the moment :D.

Dortmund ............. Middlesbrough

We are actually twinned with Dortmund iirc, so that comparison would be accurate.
