Satellite radio sports rights are reminiscent of the dot-com bubble. XM and Sirius are both trying to grab whatever they can, whether or not they think they can really recoup the money or not, just so the other doesn't have it.

I can't believe there's not a soccer channel yet - considering the number of MLS and USL and even MISL teams that are either on the radio or do streaming audio online, you'd think you could create a channel that carried those. That would rock.

Why, no, I'm sure Garber would hate to have someone pony up for rights to MLS on the radio. :rolleyes:

Except it's really hard to do outdoor soccer on the radio, and you can't sell as many commercials in it as you can in a hockey game, so recouping your investment is harder to do.

A satellite radio service that overpays for a property has to count on increased subscriptions from devotees of that property to help offset the costs. Sirius has to hope for a boatload of Howard Stern fans to come over to offset what they're paying him.

Given American soccer fans are notorious for not putting their money where their mouths are, I'd say the fault lies with business reality more than it does with Don Garber.

But, hey, it's Bigsoccer - put blame wherever it's most convenient for you, whether or not it has any basis in reality.

Good point, aleaguer. XM being satellite radio are hoping on an increase in subscriptions from hockey fans around the country and preventing big hockey fans from leaving them for Sirius. Therefore the economics are a bit different.

And, XM just got their license to broadcast in Canada (Sirius already has one). XM's Canadian division will pay a portion of the rights fee. Add in that the NHL can presumably use the channel slots that were created for MLB, and the deal makes some sense for XM.

I do have Sirius and probably won't give it up anytime soon because it was a gift from my parents, who oddly enough, have XM. Maybe in a couple of years I'll get a hand-held or in-car XM.

XM also signed MLB last within the past year for an ungodly amount as a knee-jerk reaction after Sirius grabbed the NFL and Howard Stern.

This hockey deal sure seems absurdly high.

The obvious reason for this is XM's expansion into Canada ahead of Sirius who enters that market next year.

However, Sirius must have tapped up the price. They have every other sport but baseball and XM needed this contract for their image.

As for MLS, Sirius is more open to niche programming than XM.

But $100 million for american soccer? No frickin way.
