How do Germans view Beckenbauer?

It seems like he's always the first one to criticize the German team... like it's a catastrophy whenever they don't win.

I grew up idolizing the Kaiser..... So happy 60 to one of the best players to play the game of soccer. He and Pele inspired me to play the beautiful game, and I have enjoyed every minute of my 35 years being involved with the sport.

So Franz Beckenbauer, Happy Birthday and thank you for all you have given the sport.

Moving this to the Beautiful Game forum... might be more appropriate there, with a bigger and more far-reaching impact.

And let me say, I can't believe he's 60. Where has the time gone?

Any memmories at Franz are welcome here. We should make

Maybe, one of these days you will get to the German boards on Big Soccer. :p

I was never a Cosmos fan.....Minnesota Kicks for me! Here is a great photo of Franz and another great German player. Both in their respective NASL football uniforms.

I usualy post at US men /American board not german board despite
I´m German. It is because I love american soccer. Of course I love
german soccer too. But it is easy to get information about german soccer in Germany:). It is effort to keep informed about american soccer.

Well it looks like many former Cosmos fans forgot Beckenbauer.
I thought more Americans would say for him Happy Birthday:)

Beckenbauer is the highly appreciated expert on soccer.
He managed to bring the WC to Germany next year.
He do a lot for german and international soccer.
He often do comments on games on soccer games on T.V.
And if he critize Klinsmann, then he knows always why and
provide us with arguments. German like Beckenbauer.
His favorite celebration is "Oktoberfest" in Munich.

Beckenbauer is legend.

I think like most people, they respect Franz, as he was something "special" as a player. But, like most great players, they tend to stick their foot in their mouths every now and then.

He's an annoying ******** who should just shut up and dissapear from public life. And all the ass kissing he gets on TV makes me want to puke.

I think this view is not uncommon among younger Germans that didn't see Beckenbauer play and only know him from his current TV presence. Especially Northern Germans. Sometimes I think people that hate Beckenbauer would kiss his feet if he'd be playing for Germany today. But that is probably wishful thinking...Beckenbauer was already disliked by many Northerners when was active, hated him when he played for Bayern, liked him when he played for Germany...

Would be cool if they'd do the same or something similar on Gerd Müller's 60th birthday this November. But they won't.

Indeed :D. I probably wouldn't hate him as much as Ballack if he was active today though ;).

Beckenbauer is one of the best players to ever play the game. And like most great players (see Pele, Maradona), when they get older they say stupid things and still believe that they are important.

Klinsmann is smarter and more humble than Beckenbauer. He should be the model for German soccer. Of course Der Bomber, Gerd Müller, is the greatest striker of all time.

Auf wiedersehen!
