I lived in Germany many many years ago, and for some reason, I started following Schalke's UEFA cup run when they played against Bruges (3rd round I think?). Then Max and Mulder get injured, they lose 1-0 in the 1st leg against Tenerife and they were in real relegation threat in the league, so things were looking bleak. The 2nd leg against Tenerife was one of the most exciting stressful matches I've ever seen. (Ironically, Jupp Heynckes coached that Tenerife side.) Corner after corner after corner, and when Wilmots hit the winner in ET, we went nuts! The two-legged final against Inter was amazing, I couldn't believe they were attacking against Inter in the 2nd leg being up 1-0.. I can still remember the shootout, even though I was blasted out of my mind!!

I've been a Schalke fan ever since...

I wouldn't overrate the current position. Promotion shouldn't be the goal yet - most important thing is to stay up, everything else is just a bonus. But personally I think that, with some luck, a finish in the upper half of the table isn't unrealistic.

Thank you. Iīm glad that Canadian is a fan of german club.
Will you watch the Champions League?
Schalke has the best fans in Germany. But you probably know
about "blue" fans who do everything for the club, they really support
this club so much.
Iīm glad I met you here despite you are not fan of Beckenbauer of
Bayern Munich. I live in Leverkusen and you probably know Bayer
Leverkusen (not the best club right now). But Leverkusen made the best
education for many Bayern stars like Ballack:).

It looks like we started to talk about Bundesliga instead about originally
topic Beckenbauer. Of course any discussion is welcome here.
Thanks for your contribution on this board.

So would anyone else say congratulations and wished for Beckenbauer?
Does anyone of you have some good memories or good stories
about Franz?

This thread should belong to our Kaiser. So if possible less
rivarly between "northern" Germany and Bavaria.
I think Franz played for German national team as well. So please
donīt reduce him only to "Bayern Munich" only. Plus he played for
Cosmos NYC. So where are fans from NYC here?

Thank you.

I thought I read somewhere that Franz is losing popularity in Germany very rapidly. Too much criticism, too many commercials, etc.

Of course he is more active in "commercial" advertisement (on T.V) more now...but he still do a lot for our german soccer...and we should not
forget his contribution to german soccer...he is 60...so we should
try to remember his good time...Franz is Bavarian....Bavarian and especially
Bayern Munich is not very popular in other parts of Germany...
My father was from Bavaria so my relationship to Bavaria is maybe
different:)

Are here more fans of Beckenbauer ? Maybe some old fans from Cosmos NYC?

People that criticize Beckenbauer for doing too many commercials must keep in mind this is his sole form of income these days. All his other jobs (Bayern president, World Cup 2006 committee) are unsalaried. He has been married three times thus he can't afford to stop earning money, and the only way he can do it is by doing commercials.

Also, I will never understand how people that don't know him personally can accuse him of being arrogant. Where's the proof? People that have met him all report that he is nice and easy going, not a glimpse of arrogance about him.

Thank you for my friend. I absolutely agree.
I also donīt understand why people critize him only for doing money
in advertisement (promotion on T.V). I donīt think someone of us
would reject an offer do promotion on T.V if they had got any.
It is sign of respect of his work.

Der Kaiser is Kaiser. And for people who think that he only does
advertisement, should look back what everything Franz has done
for our soccer. We are grateful to him that he managed to bring
the big event WC 06 to Germany. I think great job!

Eh? He's reported to have over 50m Euros in assets. If he's not generating any income from that, he should definitely look for a new financial adviser.

According to a lengthy interview with Franz Beckenbauer broadcast on Arte last Friday, he said he needs to do commercials to earn money. Remember he has been married three times and divorced two times. That costs. I tend to believe what Beckenbauer said more than what internet reports say.
