Some months ago I heard of plans to build a new 70.000-seater. Are there any news on this topic?

I have to look it up (read google).

Btw, IIRC Lyon's mayor reacted like: "We only build a new bigger stadium if OL wins the Champions League 5 times in a row". What he was trying to say was that he doesn't see any chances to realise that plans.

A better solution might be to increase the Gerland to 55-60,000 seats if possible.

aulas' idea for gerland is to let the local rugby team play there (the two clubs would essentially change places in town), but generally they play in front of less than 5000!

Just for my understanding. OL has plans to build a new 70.000-seater?

Today from l'equipe.fr... This is really nice to hear...

For those who can't read french, it basically says that today's game against Real Madrid could have filled a stadium of more than 120,000... around 2011, they will either have remodeled stade de Gerland (which is the preference) from 39,000 today to a stadium of 60,000... if not, they would look into building a whole new stadium in the same urban area... in any case, they are looking very closely with the city for a new stadium... so forget the rumors, within the next 6 months we'll have a clearer picture of what will be planned...

there's been talk about a new stadium for OL. the local general press and rumors on olweb have been talking about renovation of gerland, a site in venissieux, and even their moving to pusignan, out past the airport!

Now there's a story in l'équipe about it. http://www.equipe.fr/Football/20051129_221559Dev.html

the plan to enlarge gerland to 55,000 or even 60,000 seats has a big downside: during construction they would have to close down one side of the stadium then the other, bringing capacity under 30,000 for two seasons (if finished on schedule).

i'm not sure what i think about this. i know this building site pretty well as it's just across the freeway from a place my son has played. it would be on the direct metro line from my house (for gerland we have to change) but i have a feeling it's going to be a hike from the metro to the stadium. until they assure me otherwise, i'm going to remain outraged.

i don't think you understood the article too well... it says they will build a new stadium of 55,000 while gerland's capacity would be brought down from 41,000 to 30,000 due to high maintenance costs... le stade gerland would then become home of the LOU (lyon rugby team) while OL would play its games at this new stadium... so i think you got a little confused, maybe i'm completely wrong...

that would be great for french football... i was hoping a little closer to 60,000 (like marseille) but that's still good enough... i can't wait when PSG starts talking about a new stadium (even though a) it won't be for another while and b) i love the parc des princes so much, i don't know if i'd want to leave it after all)...

also, i know that lille will be deciding soon about where its new stadium will be... anybody know its capacity (33,000?)... and i know nice will be building a new stadium instead of rai, anybody know anything about that?

my remarks about the renovation of gerland weren't based on this article project on this article but on previous projects: one was to fill in the 4 corners, which would bring capacity to about 50.000, another was to either redo the second tiers of jean jaurès and jean bouin (60.000) or even do both (65.000). these plans were wished for by the mayor as the stadium belongs to the city who rent it to OL. since it's a historical landmark, it becomes a white elephant if OL moves out. having the LOU play there doesn't change that much. bringing capacity down to 30.000 corresponds to the capacity they envisioned for the project they wanted to put on the site the new stadium will go (it's right across the highway from their complex). but since they presently play in front of about 5000 a match...

ok people, this discussion should be resumed... great news that should be confirmed in the next 15 days... we are talking about a brand new stadium in south east lyon that will cost 250 million euros and a capacity of about 55,000 people... from l'equipe.fr:

27/03/2006

i've been reassured about this site... i know exactly where it is; my only reticence was that i thought the nearest metro station was parilly, but actually it's closer to gare de vénissieux than gerland is to the station ... stade de gerland! and we won't have to change trains, and line D is completely automatic with trains every 90 seconds... and this will be a great thing for that part of town and they're promising a stadium as good as the allianz, and basically it's a 100% tits up situation! ...

unless we hire an australian firm to build it! :D

Why 55,000 and not 60,000 or 65,000 ? Once the Stade Velodrome goes to 80,000 seats 55,000 wont be enough to compete.

If they are worried about a lot of empty seats vs the weak and small French teams well its like that in Spain and Italy when the larger clubs there play the smaller clubs at home.
