they have racked up 5 yellow cards in the last game. Here is the list:

September 6, 2005

Lucas Neill (48')
Zeljko Kalac (49')
Marco Bresciano (64')
Vincenzo Grella (75')
Jon McKain (90')

Let's face it, why in the world would you do this up a game with a 6 goal differential? Too much beer today :). Seriously that cannot be good as that may mean some players are suspended. Or if they get another in the first playoff game, the next one could really be bad. I cannot imagine they are feeling real good right now.

I did not see the game, but how can they allow tghemselves with so many yellow cards in a game liked this?

I'd want to hear from Andy Taus or someone more familiar with Aussie football if those are their first stringers or second. Frankly I know very little about the Aussie team.

Lucas Niell is a first stringer, Marco Bresciano wants to be and the others are subs

As there was no TV broadcast of this game from the SI, I don't know why so many YC's were given, but some of the refereeing decisions by the ref were curious (eg replaying the Kalkac PK save for instance, where JK he got his YC). I'd put it down to the AFC ref being much less tolerant of the physical nature of the game played between these two teams. The SI game sure upset the AUS rhythm and fluency.

Uruguay should have the wood on AUS, especially as they play a much more physical and agressive game than AUS ever will, starting at the airport passport control in Montevideo (sp?) :)

Don't worry about Uruguayan immigration tricks just yet. Unless the Charruas can pull off an upset of Ecuador in the altitude of Quito, it's unlikely to be a problem.

If you want to productively worry as a fan, you're probably better off concerning yourself with the challenges of going to Colombia.

Either way, it's a tough road for Australia.

At least Australia get to start at the road and finish at home this time.

In today's other draw, Asia 5th (Bahrain or Uzbehkistan) gets to finish at home against CONCACAF 4th ( Guatemala or Trinidad).

Guus Hiddink would not be that worried about those yellow cards apart from Lucas Neill.

I've heard Australia prefers it this way, but wouldn't it be to the South American's advantage--only having to travel once versus twice.

It doesn't matter travel wise as virtually all our squad has to travel from Europe. They get two long trips whatever the order.

If my memory serves me correctly, in 1997 Iran's Captain Karim Bagheri and another Iranian player should have gone into the playoffs with Australia carrying yellow cards from their previous AFC qualifying game.

HOWEVER, FIFA in its wisdom deemed that these were two separate qualifying stages and wiped the slate clean.

Therefore, I fully expect FIFA to do likewise on this occasion and not have the Australian players listed carry their YCs through to the next stage.....

I like it when you point out ways that FIFA will show their consistency in their application of fairness principles, especially when it comes to all matters AUS.

Like to put some money on which way FIFA will go with these YC's ??? :D

exactly right. The heat and humidity in Baranquilla can be quite deadly. And the Aussie's have already lost to Uruguay in the past, and that was with a weaker Uruguay NT, so I'm afraid it's best to make plans for 2010.;)
