...The flights within Europe to Germany will be worse, but I don't think the airfare is going to be gouged due to the WC, at least not for flights from the US to Germany. Still, from the west coast it is going to be over $1,000/person.
You 'might' get lucky in a few weeks here. Delta is on the verge of Chapter 11 and Northwest is expected to file before the Bankruptcy laws change in October. People don't like to buy tickets on airlines that are in bankruptcy. Earlier this year, when U.S. Air was trying to reorganize, they had a fire sale and I got springtime tickets to Rome for about $360 each.
For what it's worth, Iberia airlines has tickets from NYC to FRA (Frankfurt) for $756 right now for the June '06 timeframe. From WAS it's $961 to make the same trip on Iceland Air. (Those prices include taxes and fees). I'm looking for $500 tickets from the east coast myself.

Delta is not going anywhere. As a matter of fact Delta is converting aircraft to international configuration and expanding. When was the last time a major airline in bankruptcy liquidated? Let's all say it together, 24 years ago and Eastern Air Lines.
Lest we all forget that United has been in Bankruptcy for the past three years but I haven't seen their booking levels drop??? Further more US Scareways has been in and out of Bankruptcy twice in the past 2 years....they're still around and as a matter of fact merged with another airline.
Let's all get a grip on the modern day use of Chapter 11 of the Bankruptcy code....

You guys are always going after the bunny - next thing you know you're going after Santa Claus Air Lines and having the reindeer for Christmas Dinner! Shheeesh! :p

Hope you didn't think I was implying that those airlines were going out of business for good - I bought tickets on US Air earlier this year, when everyone thought they were sunk - they're looking pretty good now. I'm just saying DELTA and NORTHWEST may need to drop prices to keep customers if/when they declare (word on the street is Delta will file Chapter 11 in the next 48 hours)

Hmmm so everyone here going seems to want to spend time in Germany on your off-days.. Is no one else thinking of doing what i'm doing and getting out of overpriced/overcrowded Germany when your team is not playing..
As for my budget, i have about $1000 a week planned, but that is outside of tickets(already paid for USA tst), and airfare(using FF miles).. But i seriously dont plan on spending any extra time in germany outside of the actual games.
I plan on spending off days in Prauge, Warsaw, Brussels, Amsterdam, etc where hostels are very cheap..
for people looking for hostels, one site i have used to get information about places and rates is www.hostels.com they basically have hostel listings for every city in the world..

I guess I like playing the martyr. Or the idiot. Maybe there isn't a difference.
And not that it matters that much, but the transportation is via some kind of car provided by the agency, not public transportation.
Are you sure about that? Some friends of mine booked through soccer travel, and the transportation to and from games is merely a rail pass (my friends opted to stay in one city and travel to the different venues).

My wife and I love Germany, and are planning on touring around as much as we can while we're there.
We're certainly going to try to visit as many cities in other countries as possible while we're there too.

I didn't think so...
Allow me to re-phrase....will there be any plans for group meet-ups to drink and sing the night before the matches, or will it be more informal?

I'm sure there will be. You don't expect us to plan that now though, do ya?
I don't even know where I'm gonna get drunk this weekend yet.

I have a friend in Stuttgart who's recommended a few places there where U.S. supporters would be more than welcome, and if we somehow get drawn there, I'll see what I can do to get in touch with them.

you know it. I hope you enjoyed Germany.
Will you come to WC 06?
Where will you stay?

I love Germany. My wife and I will be coming to World Cup 06, but we haven't decided where we're going to stay yet. Probably in Cologne.

you was quicklier with the answer than me...american perfectionism:)
Correct. You answered perfect.
Maybe the advantages of living in Cologne is that is is not far away
to Holland, Belgium, Luembourg and France.
Of course other cities like Munich or Berlin are very beautiful.
So you have hard choise Americans.
