AUS is to bid for the WC Finals of 2018, on behalf of the OCEANIA Confederation.

 That should really put the cat amongst the FIFA pidgeons, especially UEFA & the English FA who are acting as though hosting in 2018 is their birth-right.

The old Septic Bladder & FIFA will have to put up or shut up about their beloved "confederational rotation of wc finals hosting". It will be good to see them squirm & lie their way out of this one.

And so it should be. It's about time England got it. 2018 would make it 52 years since the last one there. England is the birthplace of football as we know it (international or otherwise). It should be England.

Nobody wants to trek across the world to Australia. Too expensive and too in the middle of nowhere (football speaking). Nice place for surfing but this is the World Cup.

Australia joins the Asian Football Confederation from 2006, though it is also believed there are complex political machinations afoot for Oceania to become a sub-zone of Asia which might help the plan.
Now that is good to hear. It makes absolutely no sense for the OFC to continue on its own.

Poland or the Netherlands would be better candidate for me than England. England may wait 2026 after all.

At first glance the idea of including New Zealand, and thus sharing the WC is a poor one.

At second glance does Australia have the backing of Asia in this bid? It would be stupid to begin a bid without having a strong expectation of votes from their supposed base camp. But I can imagine at least some of Asia not necessarily wanting to support Australia, instead opting for China in a bid.

-Then there's the rotation thing and I guess that's where the Oceania angle gets worked in since they haven't had a WC yet. Damned inconvenient that Australia won't be part of Oceania any more.

-Not sure if this pig has wings but if it continues I see votes being taken from England by it. You know there will be other countries bidding.

I'm curious, will Australia receive an automatic bid if they host a World Cup?

Given that Aus are no longer in Oceania, presumably you support the WC being in New Zealand in '18?

On the other side of the coin, the U.S.A had the World Cup in 1994 and the Olympics in 1996. Personally, I'd rather England have the World Cup than the Olympics but it's too late now. Still, there might be a chance they get both. It's not really England's fault that they had neither the Olympics or World Cup for over 50 years and suddenly they might get both within a short space of time.

Mexico has a bid for 2018 also, but i think AUS might have a better chance.

England or Mexico or an Eastern European country (if feasible) should get it all above Australia.

I'd agree with what Kopthat! said earlier.

You've already had it once. The Aussies never have. Just because they arent a world footballing presence doesnt mean they shouldnt be given an equal look when considering where the WORLD cup will be. As long as the facilities and infrastructure of the nation are up to date, I dont see why Australia wouldnt be given a shot.

I'm just pleased as punch to put the old Septic Bladder on the spot, you know, call him & FIFA's bluff wrt the confederational "hosting rotation" & the status of OCEANIA within FIFA. It's put up or shut up time for them, on BOTH issues.

Er, that's exactly what the world did in 2000, and everybody had a great time.

They have the infrastructure and the stadiums.

They have the infrastructure and the stadiums. Also in 1956 (MELB Olympics), 2003 (RWC), numerous Commonwealth games (one coming up in MELB), and other world class events but that counts for nothing to this arrogant, ignorant & non-thinking pommie twit.

M, try reading & comprehending the article.

Er, I have done. The proposal has most games being played in Asia (football speaking!) with a token few in New Zealand. This can't credibly be called even joint-hosting, so presumably given your past support for Oceania getting its turn, you support New Zealand hosting?

Afaik, this 'rotation' has never formally been defined. And as every man and his dog (aside from Andy Taus) knows, having Oceania as part of the rotation simply isn't credible and isn't going to happen.

Don't believe a word they say, do you ? Work on the nod, nod, wink method of football governance within FIFA, do you ? Do you believe in anything you see, hear or read ?

BTW, who runs & is accountable for the FIFA WC Finals ?

I don't believe FIFA have formally said that there will be a strict rotation between each and every confederation. Are you claiming the contrary? And I'm still convinced this will end up as an Americas/Europe/RotW rotatation in the end.

For strange reasons, The Olympics have gone hand-in-hand with the World Cup. For example:

Munich 1972 & World Cup West Germany 1974.
Altanta 1996 & World Cup USA 1994
Mexico city 1968 & WC Mexico 1970

It is not a surprise the olympics goes together, as to host tournaments of these size there needs to be significant upgrades to everything in the country. Stadiums, transport links etc... once you've done an olympics, a world cup is a natural follow on.

Australia are welcome to bid. However I do not rate their chances.
