He started in the game at Panama in the semifinal round.
I believe the own goal was scored by a Panamanian player in the match at RFK.

1. Own goal was scored by Jose Anthony Torres of Panama in the 90th minute of our Semi-Final home game against Panama. It's the one where we all thought Gooch scored his first international goal.
2. Mathis was involved in the Colombia and Honduras friendlies prior to the Hex back in early spring. He nearly scored an absolutle bomb against Honduras in New Mexico but it smashed off the bar and GAM cleaned up the scraps.

oh ok, i remember that own goal, i thought he meant a US player scored an own goal.
So these rankings aren't just for WCQ's?

No, they are indeed for all WCQ's (and only WCQ's). That includes two games against Grenada, 6 semi-final round games, and 7 (so far) Hex games.

Mathis also played in a few semi-final round qualifiers if memory serves...

Shhh.....sidefootsitter will hear you. ;)
I'm surprised that Pope is 6th on the minutes list, and am wondering where he'll fall on that list between now and the World Cup. The minutes played is very revealing....Dempsey is way down on the list for all the attention he gets on BS, Wolff is third among strikers, Pablo, Zavagnin, and Armas are all real close, etc...

Shhh.....sidefootsitter will hear you. ;) Right. The person whose importance shouldn't be underestimated is Eddie Johnson with 7 goals in 398 minutes vs. Donovan's 7 in ~ 1,300.
This is not to say that Donovan didn't have some very good games (Guatemala, Costa Rica) but that his stats ought to be taken in context with the amount of time he spent on the pitch.

also add Donovans assist, that is what makes him important. He is a VERY importatn player in the attack all around. Eddie Johnson will not create his own goals. I like EJ but Donovan has done alot even when he "dissapears". Also we have not seen EJ play teams like Guatemala and Costa Rica in their respective countries. that is what will say if he is ready for the hats. I hope he is.

And his assists then? Donovan has spent most of his time as a midfielder, and his 9 assists (and the runner up coming in at 3) says a lot about his value.
If you are gonna judge a player based purely on his stats at least do it fairly.

Yeah, cuz seven goals in 15 games sucks.

should also be noted that Brian Ching is now healthy. I wouldn't be surprised if he were called in for the October qualifiers.

Measuring someone by their personal stats (e.g. goals, assists) always seems to me to be a little shortsighted. I'd like to see the +/- stat that's popular in hockey, where you show total scoring for and against the team during the minutes that a player plays. I think that would be more (albeit still not completely) revealing. Does anyone know if such a stat exists anywhere?
