View Full Version : Best films of the 2000s (so far)
Ghost

Well, we're three years in and i thought I would see what films people like so far this decade. Yeah, my films are somewhat hoity-toity, but I intend for htis thread to be for anyone who has an opinion, not just the people who read Film Comment.
I would say the decade so far has been a mixed bag. The top films have been pretty darn good, but the stuff not at the top has been very bad junk. I haven't seen a film that left me agape so far this year, so my list is pretty much from 2000 and 2001. Here's hoping some good films hit at the end of the year and this list can change.
1) Amores Perros
2) Requiem for a Dream
3) Mulholland Drive
4) George Washington
5) In the Mood For Love
6) In the Bedroom
7) Memento
8) The Royal Tennenbaums
9) Crouching Tiger, HIdden Dragon
10) The House of Mirth

more or less in order...
1 Almost Famous
2 Lord of the Rings: Fellowship
3 Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
4 Amelie
5 Best in Show
6 Gosford Park
7 About a Boy
8 You Can Count On Me
9 High Fidelity
10 (tie) Monsoon Wedding, In the Bedroom
Others receiving consideration:
Traffic
Y Tu Mama Tambien
The Closet
O Brother Where Art Thou
Minority Report
The Man Who Wasn't There
(In skimming through Rotten Tomatoes Top 50 for the three years, I almost find no others I would even give a Thumbs Up to...)
Two repeats from Ghost's list. Memento was also close for me, as well. Have to see Amores Perros soon.
Requiem for a Dream seems one of the more overrated movies to me. Like a long MTV video about drug use.
Mullholland Drive did little for me as well, also mostly just a "taste" issue, as I'm not a huge Lynch fan. (Other than The Straight Story, which was one of my favorite films of the 90s).
I thought Royal Tennenbaums was kind of a dud. Seemed unfocused after the brilliant Rushmore and fine Bottle Rocket.

No particular order:
Snatch
Black Hawk Down
We Were Soldiers
Behind Enemy Lines
Apocalypse Now Redux (if you can count it as 2000s)
Hmm, that's pretty much all I can think of...when did The Perfect Storm come out?

Just a few off the top of my head.
Dancer in the Dark
You can Count on me
Requiem for a Dream
Magnolia
Spiried Away
Pola X
The Man who Wasn't there
and if Decalogue is from the 2000's (I thought it was older) then that definately makes the list as well.

Great list, but Gosford park is one of the most amazingly, incredibly, undeniably, authentically, without a doubt, #1, gourmet ,special edition , world class BORING movie.
The Royal tennenbaums seems to rank different on everyone's list. Like everything from Wes anderson so far, i loved it.
IN no order:
1) Ryal tennenbaums
2) Almost famous
3) High fidelity
4) Amelie
5) Traffic
6) Snatch
and a bunch more.

Decalogue was not released in the U.S. until 2001. That's why I included it (it was shot in 1987, I believe)

It's been playing in repertory for years and years. Just about once a year you can go down to Lincoln Center in NYC and see it. Maybe its being released as sort of a 15-year anniversary thing?
The ten episodes were shot for Polish TV around 86 or 87. Can you imagine that - these were made for TV movies. And then there's the junk that we get here, in this day and age. Kinda makes me yearn for Communism.

1. Mulholland Dr. - I've raved about this before; it's just fabulous.
2. The Road Home (Wo de fu qin mu qin), which is cheating a bit - actually a '99 film but not released in the US until 2000
3. Amelie
4. 24 Hour Party People - the most fun I've had at the movies in years.
5. The Widow of St. Pierre - the bleakest film ever, perhaps, but still very powerful.
6. Hedwig and the Angry Inch - the 2nd most fun I've had at the movies in years. I'm very angry at myself that I missed the Off-Broadway show.
7. Spirited Away
8. The Filth And The Fury
9. Billy Elliot - I'll admit that I'm a major sucker, but I thought this was great.
10. The Others - simple ghost story, well told.
