Would you say we already won it because we qualified first, or do we have to follow through with these next three meaningless (for us) games and finish in first?

Not that it really matters in the long run, just curious as to what everyone thinks.

Is the point of World Cup qualifying to qualify for the World Cup or to win a 6-team, 10-game tournament?! Seems pretty simple to me......

True dat.

Although, since our only tough game left remaining is at Costa Rica, I really don't want us losing to these minnow teams like Guatemala and Panama.

I voted for winning the hex. Because in order to win the hex, you have to WIN THE HEX.

If you ask me what our goal should be from this point out, I'd say screw finishing first -- it's about preparation now.

Winning a World Cup berth is pass/fail.

Winning the Hex, well, that's different...finishing in first deserves its own trophy.

...and neither will Bruce. Plus, the guys who'll be on the pitch, for the most part, are fighting to make a WC roster. These games will present a tremendous opportunity to display their talent in a game situation.

The motivation shifts from trying to qualify to players trying to earn a roster slot. The roster has the talent to win this game, and if they aren't motivated by a potential trip to Germany, then they won't get that opportunity.

Most of the guys who played on Saturday are going to be on the WC team, and they know it. That won't be true on Wednesday...

In the Gold Cup, there were signs that called it a tournament, playing for the Gold Cup itself. There were no signs in Crew Stadium calling it the Hex Cup, the Hex tournament, or anything about the Hex. It said World Cup qualifier.....

You're right..."winning the Hex" would mean winning the Hex. I just don't think that's been the point of these 7 games........

ahh... good point. i voted "finishing first" without giving it much thought or before reading the thread. that makes sense to me, though. i unofficially change my vote. :)

No, getting to the World Cup was the point, but to guarantee that would mean working towards staying as close to the top as possible, ideally winning the tournament, right?

Winning the Hex would be the means to an end, but not the end itself. Sorry....that sort of sounds like a fortune cookie. ;)

how many of you guys remember who finished top three in last hex as compared to who finished first?

no fan qualifying first four years ago would try to stick it in the face of a fan who's team came in first in the HEX, no contest for me
