Hi,
I was reading the post written below regarding which Coerver DVDs to purchase. I am alittle confused as there seem to be so many Coerver sets, without real direction as to which ones to purchase as a BEGINNER!
Let's assume someone has no experience with soccer is is a real Newbie.
Which DVDs should that person buy that start from fundamentals and work up in a progrssion. IOW, what order should I buy/use the DVDs in?
I borrowed one of their old VHS tpaes, I think it was called "fundamentals vol.1" or something like that. Now I see they a whole slew of DVDs.
I purchased play like a soccer legend and boy oh boy, what crap, they never mentioned that it really was not an instructional but more of a promo.
I am currently using the DVD "Gol!", has some good stuff, but also a lot of stuff that is only demonstrated, not taught.
Are there any other series or single DVDs other than Coerver you could recommend?
thanks,
FutbolNewbie!

Don't worry about coerver coaching, work on basic skills yourself. Most players in the world only have 3 basic moves they do anyway, all that extra stuff is really not needed becuase all too often in the states, players look like clowns. They bust out their moves in their own half of the field or when no one is around. the most important thing you can work on is dribbling, passing and finishing.

As a the Coerver Indiana coach, I am insulted that you would insinuate that Coerver has anything to do with the type of play you are describing. Sure players learn to make these moves, and then fail to use them at the right time, but that is not my fault or that of Coerver's. We teach nothing but "essential" skills, those that will take a player to the next level. To purport that no one needs perform anything "fancy" like a step over or a Cruyff turn is to sound like an idiot. Teams at the college level need both artists and warriors, but you would have us all believe that only warriors need apply. That is why the rest of the world looks in disdain at our level of skill on the ball, that attitude right there is the problem. Don't you understand that in all the other countries of the world, kids grow up playing in the streets, working on all those "fancy" moves, perfecting them until they are ready to play organized soccer.....which doesn't happen until they are 10 to 12 years old! We need to change the way things are done here, give young kids more freedom to play "fancy" soccer and get rid of some of this infernal structure that U8 coaches and up are laying on our players.
All right, enough rant. The newest series, "Make Your Move", is Coerver's best attempt yet to lay out their 1v1 series. It contains a good overview of their 1v1 pyramid of moves, which is very well structured for a progression type of training session. You will also see alot of skill drills or games pertaining to the 1v1 moves. Don't think that these are just for your coach. You can use these with a friend or two in the back yard, and they really are great games for teaching you how and when to pull each move. As the above poster stated, players need to know when to use a move, and when not to. These games help you learn how to read your opponents and decide if the time is right, how to set up the move, how to perform it, and how to finish it.
If you can, contact Coerver Coaching North America and get to a camp or clinic near you if you want to really challenge yourself. If not, get this set of videos and get to work. Even Roy Keane knows how to throw a scissor move every once in awhile.

Thanks Goyoureddevils!
I will look into that series further as I would like to purchase something soon.
I will be primarily be training by myself for the time being and occasionally training with a friend.
You gave a good description, and it sounds like exactly what I need. Can you tell me the difference technique-wise between this series and that old VHS series?
thanks!

Technique wise, no difference. It's full of new material, organized in a much improved "Pyramid of 1v1 Moves", that will make a lot more sense for your personal training sessions.

Hi,
One last question! What is the difference between the "New Era" Dvds and the "Masterclass"? Are they the same series or are they different. I saw a New Era which I think said Masterclass on it.
thanks

Yeah, the Masterclass tape(s) are part of the New Era Series. I believe that is the series that ends with "Fast Break Attack".... that is a fantastic series for games that you can play at practice or with your friends.
